There’s nothing better than a great meal to make a man happy. That is, of course, unless it’s made of the world’s finest truffles, Wagyu beef and covered in edible gold. Culinary enthusiasts around the world are upping the ante and creating some of the most decadent dishes history has ever seen. From lobsters painted in gold to sushi topped with Mikimoto pearls, upgrade your meal with these opulent eats.
230 Fifth’s Hot Dog ($2, 300), New York City
This hot dog won a contest held in New York for the most expensive hot dog a restaurant could produce and sell. The restaurant 230 Fifth won with a hot dog that is actually made from 60-day dry-aged wagyu (a type of Japanese cow that is massaged and fed beer or sake) and topped with Vidalia onions caramelized in Dom Perignon, sauerkraut braised in Cristal champagne, and caviar. The hot dog needs to be ordered 48 hours in advance.
Maastricht University’s Beef Burger ($332,000), The Netherlands
This isn’t actually a burger you can order off a menu…yet. Cultivated in a lab at Maastricht University in The Netherlands, the five-ounce beef burger was grown from stem cells by a Dutch scientist. The burger was featured at a launch event in London last August in an attempt to show that not all beef has to come from mistreated or genetically modified cows.
Arnaud’s Strawberry Dessert ($3.9 million), New Orleans
Deemed the eatery’s “worst selling dessert” by Arnaud’s co-owner Katy Casbarian, the dessert itself has more than a couple strawberries to thank for that title. Originally costing $1.4 million dollars, the treat now consists of a dish of strawberries served in a marinade of port, red wine, spices and citrus with vanilla ice cream. Oh, and a 7.09 carat pink diamond. The perfect dessert to order if you were thinking of proposing anyway.
Westin Hotel Bagel ($1,000), New York City
This is not your average breakfast bagel. Executive Chef Frank Tujague put together a bagel that should really only be consumed on the most special of mornings. In addition to goji berry-infused Riesling jelly, the bagel is smeared with a white truffle cream cheese and gold leaves. Don’t feel indulgent about ordering it though, a portion of the proceeds are donated to the Les Amis d’Escoffier Scholarship, which benefits current and future culinary students.
Craftsteak’s Wagyu Steak ($2,800), New York City
Now that it’s legal for restaurants to serve Japanese beef, you’ll see it appearing on more and more menus. Craftsteak is serving up a wagyu rib-eye steak with beef raised in Kobe, Japan. wagyu is highly sought-after because of the high percentage of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, and intense marbling. The combinations of these fats deliver a distinctive rich and tender flavour compared to other beef.
The Fence Gate Inn’s Meat Pie ($14,260), Lancashire
The meat pie from this UK inn works out to $1,781 per slice. Inside the pie is $870 worth of wagyu beef, a few Chinese matsutake mushrooms, winter black truffles and French bluefoot mushrooms. Together the mushrooms cost over $500 a pound. The gravy in the pie is made using two bottles of vintage 1982 Chateau Mouton Rothschild wine (a wine that is $1,740 a bottle). Don’t think they’ve forgotten about the crus, either – ; it’s covered in edible gold leaf.
Fleur de Lys’ Burger ($5,000), Las Vegas
Top Chef Masters’ Hubert Keller created this burger for his restaurant at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. The burger consists of a wagyu beef and foie gras patty, topped with truffle sauce and shaved black truffles, and is served on a brioche truffle bun. The FleurBurger 5000 comes with a bottle of 1995 Chateau Petrus Bordeaux and Ichendorf glasses which you get to take home when you order. Customers who opt for the meal also leave with a certificate or authenticity to prove they had the FleurBurger 5000. Bragging rights, friends.
Angelito Araneta Jr.’s Golden Sushi ($1,978), Manila
Seaweed for sushi? Nevermind that. Chef Angelito Araneta Jr. wants to upgrade your sushi and, instead, decided to go with 24-karat gold foil to wrap up his masterpieces when he made the Guinness Book of World Records. The pièce de résistance? They’re topped with three Mikimoto pearls and a 0.25 carat diamond. No word on what type of fish was used.
Lindeth Howe Country House Hotel’s Pudding ($34,531), England
Chef Marc Guibert went after the title of world’s most expensive dessert with a chocolate pudding shaped like a Faberge egg. A dessert that has to be ordered a whopping two weeks in advance, the pudding is made with high-end chocolate, gold leaf, champagne, caviar and is topped off with a diamond. The pudding also includes layers of champagne jelly and is laced with edible gold.
Bombay Brasserie’s Lobster Curry ($3,200), London
The curry at Bombay Brasserie is called The Samundari Khazana, which means ‘seafood treasure’ and they don’t take it lightly. The curry contains Devon crab, white truffle, Beluga caviar, gold leaf, four abalones, four quail eggs and a Scottish lobster. Oh, did we forget to mention that the lobster is coated in gold?
Nino’s Bellissima Pizza ($1,000), New York City
New York is a city that knows its pizza and at Nino’s Bellissima they know how to make pizza seem seriously fancy. Don’t even think about trying to satisfy a case of the 1AM munchies here; the $1,000 pizza has to be ordered days in advance. Topped with four kinds of caviar, the pizza also comes with a lobster tail for good measure.
Tiato’s Anqi Pho ($5,000), Santa Monica
This Anqi Pho soup was once made just to be auctioned off to benefit the Children’s Hospitals of Los Angeles and Orange County. And with good reason. The foie gras broth contains wagyu beef, white alba truffles, hand-raised bean sprouts and noodles from rare blue lobster meat. Because red lobsters simply won’t do.
Serendipity 3’s Frrrozen ‘Haute’ Chocolate ($25,000), New York City
Called the Frrrozen ‘Haute’ Chocolate, this dessert was declared the most expensive dessert in the world in 2007 by Guinness World Records. In addition to the cocoa, frozen milk and whipped cream it’s made with, five grams of 24K gold are mixed in. But that’s not all it takes to make a dessert cost $25,000. The frozen hot chocolate is garnished with La Madeline au Truffe (a truffle flown in from France), served with a gold spoon and in a goblet surrounded by a gold with a diamond crown.
Sweet Surrender’s Cupcake ($750), Las Vegas
Las Vegas is known for doing things bigger, better and flashier than anyone else, anywhere else. So it comes as no surprise that even something as simple as a cupcake could be this extravagant. The Decadence D’Or cupcake is created from chocolate made from Venezuela’s rare Porcelana Criollo bean, topped with Tahitian Gold Vanilla Caviar and edible gold flakes. It also includes Louis XIII de Remy Martin Cognac and comes in a hand blown sugar Fleur-de-Lis. Patrons interested in a taste need to order the decadent confection 48 hours in advance.
Norma’s Zillion Dollar Lobster Frittata ($1,156), New York City
While this frittata doesn’t have a huge list of ingredients, it’s the quantity of the ones it does have that makes it pricey. Called the ‘Zillion Dollar Frittata’ this deluxe omelette has an entire lobster in it as well as 10 ounces of sevruga caviar, a delicacy that costs around $65 an ounce. Get it now before someone places a gold leaf on it and the frittata climbs higher on our list.
