Stunning furniture crafted in molten aluminum and wood

Setting your cup of coffee atop one of Hilla Shamia’s stunning tables would probably feel like hanging your coat on the Venus de Milo. The works of art/furniture were initially the designer’s 2012 grad project, which he crafted by slicing tree trunks down the centre, putting the rugged slab of wood into a table-shaped mould and pouring hot molten aluminum on top. On contact, the hot liquid metal sears the wood creating a burnt-black layer of charcoal between the two decidedly-masculine elements, for a look that’s no less than striking. The result is an industrial looking collection with a polished yet masculine aesthetic. It’s a conversation piece and a place to put your coffee…if you’re ballsy enough.
