The 2015 Emmys: Best and Worst Dressed

Fall’s stand-alone award show celebrates the best in TV — and what a year it has been, with lots of incredible shows, increased diversity and, sadly, the end of many favourites (we already miss you, Mad Men). But enough on the ‘why’ of the Emmys, lets talk about the ‘wear.’ Here is our list of the best and worst dressed on the red carpet.

(1/10)

Adrien Brody – Worst Wrinkles

Brody is a suave guy, and can get away wearing things that most men can’t, but his swagger doesn’t save him this time. The suit, and even his bow tie, just look sad and saggy, and really could have done with a press before he stepped out for the event.

Alan Cumming – Worst Pants

If we were judging Cumming on his top half, he would easily be in the best-dressed category, thanks to the choice of a three-piece suit and deployment of great details (jacket chain, pocket square, patterned tie). It’s his bottom half that fails — a wide-legged trouser is one thing, but harem pants take it too far. And the rubber boots and umbrella make no sense on what was a perfectly sunny day.

Best

Andy Samberg – Best Pattern

It was a sea of black and navy on the red carpet, and while Samberg, this year’s host, was included in that group, he managed to stand out thanks to a tonal pattern on his jacket. The light played on the pattern nicely, adding an interesting element to the jacket, and he even snuck in a second, complimentary pattern with his choice of bow tie.

Hugh Dancy – Best Fit

At first this may read as just one black tuxedo among many, but once you take a closer look you realize why it’s different. The tux fits Dancy like a glove — straight shoulders, slim pants with a slight break, and no crazy wrinkles —and he was only one of a few men that went with a double-breasted jacket, which suits him perfectly.

Worst

Jay Duplass – Worst Fit

Upon first look, Duplass kind of looks like he wandered over to the Emmys after putting in a full day at the office. The suit doesn’t seem like it’s red carpet ready, and the fit is off —the shoulder are too big, the pants a little wide and long. Better tailoring, choosing a different tie, wearing a belt and keeping the jacket buttoned would have gone a long way to making this look work.

Jon Hamm – Best Details

Hamm finally took home an Emmy for the career-defining role of Don Draper In Mad Men, and looked damned dapper during his acceptance speech. The midnight blue was deep and rich, and while a black satin collar for contrast is pretty standard, the matching trim on the cuffs was a Draper-worthy detail.

Richard Blais – Worst Jacket

While the jacket in theory isn’t the worst — we’re all for a velvet tuxedo jacket in a great colour — it’s the fit that’s questionable. Blais has weird bunching going on at the shoulders, and whether it’s simply that the jacket is too small or is overzealously stuffed with shoulder pads, it’s something that should have been fixed.

Ricky Gervais – Worst Details

Or maybe we should say lack there of. The choice to forgo a tie of any kind and dress shoes (for what look like shoes that would be a better fit at the gym) is baffling considering the occasion, and just comes across as lazy. If only he put as much effort into his wardrobe as he did his comedy — he once again killed it as a presenter.

Tituss Burgess – Best Texture

Burgess, of Pinot Noir fame, chose a great textured tuxedo that was decidedly not part of the wine family. The mossy green texture, more common among the suits of the season, worked surprisingly well as a tuxedo. The fit was impeccable and the patterned bow tie and pocket square were the perfect finishing touches.

Tracy Morgan – Best Comeback

Morgan made a surprise return to the Emmys after extensive rehabilitation from the accident that rendered him comatose last year. He looked great in the merlot tuxedo jacket and unique shoes, but it was the display of his signature wit that stole the show.
