Home of the Week: The Mirror Houses, Italy

The best way to take in Italy’s South Tyrolean Dolomites? From this jaw-dropping duo of mirrored houses set amidst a sprawling apple orchard.

Situated just outside Bolzano, the landowner of a ’60s reconstructed farmhouse commissioned architect Peter Pichler to design this pair of luxury holiday homes. Lightness is given to the houses by floating them on a base above ground level, matching the surrounding landscape. A mixture between curvilinear lines and geometric flatness strikes a balance between contemporary design and blending the structure into the space.

No need to worry for the birds — despite the mirrored glass being close to invisible, it has a UV coating preventing bird collision. The comprehensive thought behind each design detail allows the structure to work harmoniously with the surrounding elements rather than compete against them.
