Finally, Lake Como Has the Luxury Resort It Deserves

Lake Como is almost a punchline.

Nestled in the foothills of northern Italy, the community is known as much for its enchanting scenery as its preponderance of regal villas and celebrity residents. It is, in short, the epitome of luxury. But as a vacation destination? It’s actually kind of fraught — either you’d have to rent one of those exquisite villas, stay at a fusty old-fashioned resort, or, you know, make friends with George Clooney and hope for an invite (and, so far, he hasn’t returned your calls).

That is, until this summer, with the opening of Il Sereno Lago di Como, the much-anticipated second outpost of the glamorous St. Barths hotel Le Sereno. Designed by Milan-based Patricia Urquiola, the 30-room resort aims to be the most luxurious — and most modern — hotel in town, complete with private terraces in each suite, a full-service spa, and one of the most stunning infinity pools in all of Europe. No offence to Clooney, but we’re staying here next time.
