Ta-Nehisi Coates on the Near Certainty of Anti-Police Violence: Here’s What We’re Reading Today

The Daily 5 is Sharp’s essential reading list for what’s happening in the world today. Make sure to follow us on Twitter or subscribe to the Sharp Insider newsletter to stay up to date.

Here’s what we’re reading:

1. Why ‘All Lives Matter’ is always an ignorant claim

“So no, stating ‘all lives matter’ is never an appropriate response to the assertion that ‘black lives matter’ for those with even an inkling of understanding of how anti-black racism has and continues to impact the United States.

“And no, inserting ‘all lives matter’ in the Canadian National Anthem is never an acceptable act for anyone with even a modicum of understanding of how discussions about anti-black racism in the United States inform discussions about anti-black racism in Canada.”

3. The near certainty of anti-police violence

“To understand the lack of police legitimacy in black communities, consider the contempt in which most white Americans hold O.J. Simpson,” Ta-Nehisi Coates writes in the Atlantic. “Consider their feelings toward the judge and jury in the case. And then consider that this is approximately how black people have felt every few months for generations. It’s not just that the belief that Officer Timothy Loehmann got away with murdering a 12-year-old Tamir Rice, it is the reality that police officers have been getting away with murdering black people since the advent of American policing. The injustice compounds, congeals until there is an almost tangible sense of dread and grievance that compels a community to understand the police as objects of fear, not respect.”

3. Can the Republican majority survive Trump?

“The party’s most vulnerable down-ticket candidates try to escape the shadow of a presidential campaign that is imperiling their prospects in November.”

+1: Jay Rosen: Donald Trump is crashing the system. Journalists need to build a new one.

4. Theresa May will continue with Brexit

“Following a vote to leave the European Union and the subsequent shattering of the UK’s political order, Theresa May is coming in to try and pick up the pieces. In her short maiden speech after taking office today (July 13), the new UK prime minister referred to the future exit, leaving little room for backtracking on the majority decision.”

5. Was Euro 2016 the death of possession soccer?

“The question of what we’ve learned tactically from the tournament is always asked, but this is not 1958, with a back four bursting forth to change the world. It’s not even 1974 and the Netherlands confirming the efficacy
of the Total Football of Ajax and Feyenoord. It’s not even 1986 and the wonderment of the back three. Euro 2016’s relation to the club game was indirect and perhaps more psychological than tactical.”
