Record Setting Floods Hit Fort McMurray: Here’s What We’re Reading Today

The Daily 5 is Sharp’s essential reading list for what’s happening in the world today. Make sure to follow us on Twitter or subscribe to the Sharp Insider newsletter to stay up to date.

Here’s what’s happening today:

1. ‘Biblical’ floods hit Fort McMurry amid wildfire recovery

“As crews pumped water from flooded areas, ash was dusted off barricades so they could be put to use keeping motorists away from waterlogged roads. During the wildfire, those barricades blocked access to acres of scorched homes. Some people were once again told to boil their water, only weeks after similar advisories put in place for the fire were rescinded.”

2. How ISIS built a ‘global network of killers’

“A jailhouse interview with a German man who joined the Islamic State reveals the workings of a unit whose lieutenants are empowered to plan attacks around the world.”

3. Trump: Tribune of America’s white working poor

In the American Conservative, Rob Dreher speaks with J.D. Vance, author of Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and a Culture in Crisis, a compassionate profile of America’s white, working poor. The conversation offers a deep insight into the lived experience of Donald Trump’s most strident supporters. “What many don’t understand is how truly desperate these places are, and we’re not talking about small enclaves or a few towns–we’re talking about multiple states where a significant chunk of the white working class struggles to get by. Heroin addiction is rampant.  In my medium-sized Ohio county last year, deaths from drug addiction outnumbered deaths from natural causes.”

4. What we know about Canada’s inquiry into missing and murdered indigenous women

“The first female indigenous judge appointed in British Columbia will now lead Canada’s inquiry into murdered and missing indigenous women and girls. Judge Marion Buller, who has been both a civil and criminal lawyer, will lead the independent inquiry into why more than 1,181 aboriginal women and girls have died in the last several decades.”

+1: Announced today, BuzzFeed Canada’s Craig Silverman breaks down the key details of the inquiry, which is slated to begin Sept. 1.

5. Why your texts sound angry when you add a period

“Earlier this year, psychologist Danielle Gunraj tested how people perceived one-sentence text messages that used a period at the end of the sentence. Participants thought these text messages were more insincere than those that didn’t have a period. But when the researchers then tested the same messages in handwritten notes, they found that the use of a period didn’t influence how the messages were perceived.”
