The Chinese swimmer, who won bronze in yesterday’s 100m backstroke, has taken over the Olympics thanks to her charm and disarming sincerity. In a world of boring and staid athletes, Yuanhui is a nice relief. She’s even winning over a Grinch like me.

In an interview after her race yesterday, Yuanhui began to explain how worthwhile all her training was, “even though I did not win a medal.”

“But you did get a medal,” the reporter interrupts. “You came in third!”
