The Iconic Louis Vuitton Trunk Just Received a Major Upgrade

The word “icon” gets thrown around a lot in magazines, and rarely is it ever earned.

But in the case of the Louis Vuitton trunk, we really, genuinely mean it: the travel accessory has been around — and almost unchanged — since the 1850s, a gleaming, canvas-bound rectangle of pure sophistication.

Now, in collaboration with industrial designer Marc Newson, the trunk has been reimagined for the modern era. The materials have been updated (instead of wood, a super-light polypropelene composite), as have security features (instead of a padlock, a three-digit TSA-approved zipper lock), and convenience (instead of no wheels, four gliding ones). Of course, it still comes in that signature monogram canvas. Because sometimes you just don’t mess with an icon.
