Syd Wilder may not be a household name (yet), but that doesn’t mean she hasn’t been busting her ass to get herself there.
Ever since moving to LA to attend the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in 2007, Wilder has worked to add just about every Hollywood job to her resume: she’s an actress, a comedian, a writer, a producer and even has a popular YouTube channel. Since her breakout role in the Seth Rogan apocalyptic horror comedy, This Is The End, Wilder has kept busy writing and starring in sketches for a multitude of platforms including Funny or Die.
“After doing stand up and audition after audition, I want to learn how to use my own voice and put it out there on my terms,” says Wilder. “Writing is one of my favorite things to do, which is ultimately what I started doing on my YouTube channel. The dream is to sell a pilot for a show that I would write, produce and star in myself. Amy Schumer-Style.”
Now, Wilder is starring in Laid in America, your classic tale of two foreign exchange students trying to hook up before heading home. Wilder will be bringing the laughs alongside MadTV alum Bobby Lee and The Office‘s Angela Kingsley.
What is your worst habit?
Chewing gum and leaving it everywhere. I’m the worst. I’ll put it anywhere, under tables and wrapped in paper. I left it in someone’s bathtub one time. But that was just one time. I learned not to do that, it’s not the smartest move.
What is your hidden talent?
I can talk while I’m posing on the red carpet for a picture, kind of like a ventriloquist. Talking without moving my lips.
What is your favourite prank to play on someone?
You know that’s a really good question. I really like to take photos of people when they are sleeping because I think it’s really funny some of the positions you end up in. Then I’ll maybe post it after I get permission. Even if I don’t get permission, I would probably post it anyway as long as it’s not my sister. She has no sense of humor about that.
What is your all time favourite comedy movie?
This Is Spinal Tap. Hands down.
What has been your favourite project to work on?
Oh I mean obviously Laid in America. I feel like I can’t have any other answer then that. It really was a lot of fun to work on.
What do you like to do when your not working?
Well I don’t really have a life [laughs]. I like to dance. Dancing is like my favorite thing to do in the world.
What is your favourite song to dance to?
Salsa. I like anything that my dance instructor plays. He’s from Spain so he knows it all.
What is your biggest pet peeve?
My biggest pet peeve is people being mean to other people for no reason and just unkind. I don’t have time for that. I don’t like it.
