Cab Driver Says John Elway Is Best QB of All Time, Has No Idea Elway’s in the Back Seat

For whatever reason, the Denver Broncos’ 1998 Super Bowl win is one of my strongest memories from childhood. I was not yet 7 years old when John Elway and Shannon Sharpe squeaked one out over the the Green Bay Packers. I remember the post-game mostly — Elway celebrating his first Super Bowl in his final game. “This one’s for John,” Broncos owner Pat Bowlen said during the celebration.

(Okay, I don’t really remember that last part, but Wikipedia sure does). It was one of the earliest indications that sports could mean something other than just sports.

Now, nearly 20 years later, I don’t much care about football, nor do I have particularly strong feelings about John Elway’s place in history. But damn, that game was special. Whether or not he’s the greatest of all time is not for me to say.

This cab driver in Pittsburgh, however, seems more than happy to rank him as the greatest of all time.

The video has been viewed almost 300,000 times since it was uploaded yesterday and is pretty, pretty heart-warming.

From the YouTube description:

With Elway seated in the back seat, a cab driver decked out in Steelers gear was asked to rank his top-3 all-time quarterbacks. He had no idea that Elway was in his car, but he immediately ranked Elway at No. 1 ahead of Tom Brady and Ben Roethlisberger. Once Sam was told to turn around, he recognized Elway right away and was super excited to be driving the Hall of Famer. Elway agreed to take a photo with him.
