Here’s what we’re reading today.
1. Donald Trump ‘very proud’ after dropping ‘Mother of All Bombs’ on Afghanistan
“US command used a cargo plane to drop the the largest non-nuclear weapon ever used in combat by the American military in Nangarhar province near the Pakistan border – a remote area where members of an Isis affiliate were operating.”
2. Saturn’s moon Enceladus holds ‘food source’ for potential life
“The search for life in our solar system just become a bit more interesting.
While scientists have not found life on Enceladus, Saturn’s moon, they have found the next best thing: food that could sustain potential life. The food source is in the form of molecular hydrogen, which could feed microbes as it does here on Earth.”
3. How we learn to exclude people
“We start learning how to form friendships pretty much as soon as we’re born: the first time we hold a gaze, return a smile, recognize a face or a voice. By the time we’re old enough to understand the word friend, we already know that a bond with another person is something worth pursuing — it makes us feel good.
Kids spend the first decade or so of their lives figuring out what it takes to sustain a meaningful friendship, and they do it, in part, by discovering what it means leave people out.”
4. Outing of a trans ‘Survivor’ contestant generates heat — and light
“It’s been a while since CBS’s “Survivor” had much resonance in our culture. But last night, the show — now in its 34th season — stumbled into a timely issue, and provided 15 minutes of emotional, provocative, and enlightening TV.
During the weekly tribal council scene, contestant Jeff Varner revealed to the other players that rival Zeke Smith is transgender. Varner was trying to help his own chances in the game by demonizing two-time “Survivor” contestant Smith over his decision to keep his gender history private. “There is deception here,” Varner began, and then asked Smith, “Why haven’t you told anyone you’re transgender?””
5. Tomi Lahren sounds off on Glenn Beck: ‘I won’t lay down and play dead’
“Tomi Lahren just wants her 4.2 million Facebook followers back.
It has been close to a month since the 24-year-old provocateur has delivered one of her deliberately controversial Facebook Live segments for Glenn Beck’s TheBlaze, which fired her from her position last month after she declared herself “pro-choice” and called anti-abortion conservatives “hypocrites” on The View.
Apparently those remarks made the woman who has called Black Lives Matter “the new KKK” too progressive for Beck’s right-wing empire.”
