Watch Solange Confirm Incubus’ Coolness By Joining Them Onstage

California alt-rockers Incubus have long been given an unfair shake by music critics. When they aren’t being derided as “surf-bums” or “middling,” or “stinkubus” (that one’s particularly mean), they’re getting flat-out ignored by Pitchfork and the like. This, despite being among this century’s most commercially successful bands and amassing a giant international following over the years with their visceral, exploratory, left-field take on the rock template. (Okay, I’ll admit it: I’m an Incubus stan.)

Well, last night, Solange —Beyoncé’s younger, cooler, Pitchfork-worshipped sister — gave Incubus some sweet vindication by joining them onstage in New Orleans. The chanteuse exchanged sweet melodies with Incubus’ Brandon Boyd on a hair-raising rendition of “Aqueous Transmission,” off the band’s 2001 album Morning View. And guess what? The music blogerati had no choice but to take notice. Ha! Eat that, you insufferable snobs.

Earlier this year, Solange penned a letter to her teenage self in Teen Vogue, where she mentioned going through a “Rasta vegan thrifter” phase during which she was “determined to marry Brandon Boyd.” Sigh, weren’t aren’t we all…

Watch the superior Knowles sister join Incubus below, and read our interview with Boyd, during which he coached me through a breakup, here.
