The Very (Mostly) Best TV Shows of Fall 2017

It’s not that your friends are tired of hearing your “counterintuitive” take on The Big Bang Theory. It’s just that there are other things out there. Expand your horizons. For a start, here are September’s most exciting television offerings.

The Deuce

Blame sibling rivalry. Maggie Gyllenhaal, sister of the guy on our cover, stars in this exploration of the porn industry in the ’70s and ’80s from The Wire creator David Simon. James Franco co-stars as a pair of twins, with the porn ’stache he was born to wear.

The Good Place

In last season’s finale, this otherwise generic network sitcom dropped a total bombshell. (Spoiler: we’re not going to tell you what it was.) The dramatic twist makes us unexpectedly excited for Season 2. Plus, we could all use more Ted Danson in our lives.

The Orville

Seth MacFarlane is annoying. But his new Star Trek parody looks promising, if for no other reason than it also stars Friday Night Lights alum Adrianne Palicki, who never got the star treatment she so rightly deserves.

Better Things

In Louie, Pamela Adlon plays Louis C.K.’s female foil. In Better Things, co-created by C.K. and entering its second season, she headlines her own vehicle. If that sounds good to you already, you’re in luck. If not, we promise you’re missing out.
