How Much Should I (Really) Be Grooming?

It depends. But we swear that’s not a cop-out answer. In fact, it’s a pretty revolutionary way of looking at men’s grooming. Because while women’s beauty has long catered to varying needs, men’s grooming has taken a one-size-fits-all approach, which makes this century’s pendulum swing from hairless metrosexual to burly lumbersexual (and while we’re at it, maybe a moratorium on the “-sexual” suffix?) all the more confusing.

“It really should be that way for men, too, because it’s not the 1950s anymore and not everyone has the same haircut. And thank God for that,” says Diana Schmidtke, Hollywood’s go-to grooming expert, who works with the likes of Ryan Gosling, James Franco and George Clooney. Basically, Schmidtke says, groom what would otherwise be distracting. That includes trimming anything as obvious as a unibrow (“never in style”) to an extra-long rogue eyebrow (Schmidtke’s personal pet peeve) or any chest hair making a cameo from your collar. Her other notes: wash your face twice a day, and, if possible, get a facial every couple of months (when your skin is balanced from below, you don’t have to worry as much about oiliness, blemishes, and other skin irritations).
