The 2018 Met Gala’s Most #Blessed Looks

Last night in New York, the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute’s latest exhibition, Heavenly Bodies: Fashion And The Catholic Imagination, premiered at the Met Gala, arguably the biggest fashion event of the year. This year’s iteration of the Anna Wintour co-chaired ball sparked some religious backlash, due to its theme centred on the Catholic church and the influence of Catholicism on fashion. The evening’s A-list guests certainly stuck to the dress code, and some looks were downright sinful.

Heavenly Bodies explores the ways in which Catholic iconography has inspired legions of designers, like Dolce and Gabbana, Chanel, Balenciaga, and Versace. The exhibit displays modern designs along with papal robes, embroidered chasubles, and other accessories on loan from the Vatican via the Sistine Chapel sacristy.

The men on the red carpet did not scrimp on the blasphemy. Here are the boldest, most blessed outfits we saw.

DONALD GLOVER

Donald Glover has been on fire lately, and he kept the flame alive with his Met fit. Rocking a purple Gucci suit with black accents, the pièce de résistance was the all-seeing eye in gold detailing on the back of Glover’s suit jacket.

The gates of heaven themselves might as well have opened when Jared Leto entered the venue. Wearing Gucci, Leto’s Virgin Mary blue suit was accompanied by a floral brocade stole and golden crown, set atop his luscious locks. He killed it… and then resurrected it.

VIRGIL ABLOH

Virgil Abloh, a.k.a. the man taking over the fashion world, had a lot to live up to and he did not disappoint. Recently named Louis Vuitton’s menswear artistic director, Abloh rocked a preview from his first Spring/Summer 2019 collection for the fashion house. He paired the all-white LV suit his with his Off-White x Jordan 1’s featuring an Abloh signature tag, reading ‘For Red Carpet Only.’

IDRIS ELBA

Avengers: Infinity War star and all-around bad ass Idris Elba kept it simple in an all-black tuxedo from Givenchy, which he helped design. The ensemble matched that of his new fiancée Sabrina Dhowre. Love in Hollywood! It still exists!

DARREN CRISS

Darren Criss decided to go literal, rocking a Dolce and Gabbana outfit that celebrated one heavenly body in particular: his own. The Glee star’s brightly sequinned jacket featured various religious imagery, along with what appeared to be his own face embellished on the left shoulder. Troll game strong. And we must confess, the matching burgundy bowtie and pants perfected the look.
