What is Graphene?

Superheroes take note: your next suit material has arrived. Graphene is a one-atom-thick layer of carbon organized in a honeycomb pattern, making it the thinnest material known to man. However, being really thin isn’t its only superpower: it’s also harder than diamond, 300 times stronger than steel, able to stretch up to 20 per cent, better than copper at conducting electricity and an excellent thermal conductor. It has huge potential in batteries, touch screens, aircraft and medical equipment, but it’s unlikely we’ll see significant use in consumer products for a few years yet.
