It’s been nearly two years since Jimmy Fallon took over The Tonight Show, and while he’s injected the late night staple with an affable, frenetic energy that lends itself well to viral hits, there are still times — especially during his interview segments — where he comes across a little stilted and phony.
That affectedness is made especially evident when you watch the “During Commercial Break” clips that The Tonight Show occasionally posts on YouTube. When the cameras aren’t rolling for air, Fallon instantly seems more natural, relaxed and sharp; just take a look at his extended sandwich banter with Andy Samberg or his back-and-forth about emails with Jake Gyllenhaal for proof.
The latest example? This downright charming impromptu doo-wop session with musical icon Billy Joel, his band, and Oscar winner J.K. Simmons:
See? Now that’s a guy we can get behind, Jimmy. Stop fake-laughing your way through every conversation. Just do you.
