The GTA’s Population Is Set to Double, But Are Any of Us Ready? Here’s What We’re Reading Today

The Daily 5 is Sharp’s essential reading list for what’s happening in the world today. Make sure to follow us on Twitter or subscribe to the Sharp Insider newsletter to stay up to date.

Here’s what we’re reading:

1. Brexit looking more likely as referendum looms

“The tumbling pound highlighted growing worries that a result that would pull Britain out of the EU — once considered a long shot — is increasingly possible in the June 23 referendum. Politicians and economists have repeatedly cautioned that a Leave vote could have unpredictable consequences for both the U.K. and the wider European economy.”

2. The population in the GTA is about to double, but Ontario is nowhere near ready for it

“The province has announced new rules to help municipalities steer that growth. But critics are asking how the government will come up with the billions of dollars needed to provide relief from overcrowded schools and hospitals and poor GO Transit service in some of the highest-growth areas.”

3. In Turkey, Syrian children have to work to survive

“Over one million Syrian children live in Turkey, and thousands of them, like Ahmad, are in sweatshops, factories or vegetable fields instead of in a classroom, members of a lost generation who have been robbed of their youth by war.”

4. How disgust made us human

“Our ancestors reacted to parasites with overwhelming revulsion, wiring the brain for morals, manners, politics and laws.”

5. Ryan Gosling’s feminism is kind of BS

Fusion’s Taryn Hillin takes the Gos to task for what she calls his benevolent sexism. “We need equality, not pandering. To paint broad strokes and say all women are better is bullshit, because women are people and some people are assholes.”
