Brazilian Fans Taunted Hope Solo With Chants of ‘Zika,’ and It Was Kind of Hilarious

The U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team took on New Zealand last night in their Olympic opener, handily defeating the Kiwis 2-0. They began their gold medal defence with a ninth-minute goal from midfielder Carli Lloyd, then sealed the win with a goal from Alex Morgan just after half time.

Pretty standard stuff from the world champions. And that’s all well and good, but here’s take a look at this. It’s a video from the game of U.S. goalie Hope Solo being taunted with chants of “Zika,” as she fires the ball back into play. It is kind of insane.

Before the tournament, Solo poked fun at the the situation in Brazil by sharing her own Zika preparedness kit with her followers on social media, which, if I can editorialize a bit here, is pretty ridiculous and pretty insensitive.

While Zika has been making headlines leading up to the Olympics, a recent Yale study estimated that out of the half a million people visiting Rio, only about 80 or fewer will likely be infected.
