Looking for some light summer reading? Author Lauren Wise has just the thing — and it might even help you spice things up in the bedroom. Her book Swap Club follows the humdrum life of a Montreal mom who somehow gets involved in a swingers’ club.
“Montreal is really notorious for the rumours about swinging couples, going as far back as the ’70s,” says Wise. “It’s kind of a stigma that the city has. That’s where the idea came from. I think it’s been resonating with readers, because after you’ve been married and had kids, conversations about and experimentation with sex kind of just ends. People can relate.”
While Wise maintains that no real clubs or members are mentioned in the book, she never once thought about changing her own name before publishing it.
“Obviously, the sex scenes make my family members a little uncomfortable when they read it,” laughs Wise. “But as with any creative endeavour, they knew to support me and let me follow my own path. No matter the lifestyle, you have to respect it!”
What is the best book you have ever read?
I’ll tell you this: I don’t read enough. My life is me sitting in front of a computer writing all day, and when I close it I’m trying to spend time with my family. The best book I have ever read goes all the way back to high school — Catcher In The Rye. That is the book that has always stuck with me.
What’s the worst book you have ever read?
I have the kind of personality where I don’t do anything that I don’t want to do. I won’t give a book more than a few pages to capture me, and if it doesn’t, it’s out. Also, as an author myself, I couldn’t ever say I hated someone’s book — if I heard someone say that about me I would be gutted. It’s so harsh.
What is the craziest party you have ever been to?
A friend invited my husband and me to a burlesque show for Valentine’s Day this year, and I had no idea how much fun it was going to be. Everyone in the audience was dressed up — I could barely tell the audience from the performers. It was called Cirque Du Boudoir. The best part was that we splurged on a VIP table, and there candy, and cookies, and gummy bears, and all sorts of things. It was really a lot of fun.
Which celebrity couple would you want to swing with?
Okay, I’m going to take one for the team here. I know my boyfriend Jason is just crazy about Salma Hayek, so I would proposition her and her husband just so he could have that moment. I can’t even picture her husband, but that’s true love!
What is your favourite swear word?
“Fuck.” It’s so versatile. Fuck you, fuck this, what the fuck… I love it.
I know you said that you don’t get to read as many books as you would like to but do you have a book that you hope gets turned into a movie?
I’m reading The Woman in Cabin 10 right now. It was actually recommended by Reese Witherspoon, so when I’m reading it I imagine her as the main character. If it hasn’t already been picked up for a movie, I really hope one gets made.
If Swap Club gets turned into a movie who would you like to see playing the protagonist Valerie?
I have like my wish list for sure. I know this is going to sound crazy, but I think Lady Gaga would be amazing. I think that she is a huge talent. I saw her in American Horror Story, and she’ll do anything for the art. A more reasonable answer would be Rachel McAdams, or a Rose Byrne, or a Kate Beckinsale: it has to be someone who is actually pushing 40 and relatable in some capacity. I don’t want anyone to watch and say, “Wow, she’s so pretty, she’s so perfect,” because Valerie is not that. She doesn’t feel good about herself, she does not have a perfect body. I kind of want to do it myself, actually. I just don’t do any nudity and I cant act, so… [Laughs.]
