What Are the Rules Governing Fragrances in the Office/Bar/Public?

First off: we love fragrances. They add a little je ne sais quoi to your day-to-day life. But the golden rule? Be considerate. Marian Bendeth, global fragrance expert and owner of fragrance consultancy Sixth Sense, says toning down your fragrance is never a bad idea. “If you are working in close proximity to others, heavier notes such as vanilla, spices, and sweet and pungent scents should be assigned towards an evening or event-type atmosphere,” she says. Think about how the person sitting next to you for hours might feel about things. (Hey, Norm.) “Your fragrance is your walking biography,” Bendeth adds. “Have a wardrobe of scents that feature different notes and volumes for different occasions.”
