10 Best Dressed Men of the 2024 Oscars
The Oscars are never starved for spotlight. Even this year, after a postponed Emmy Awards squeezed between the Golden Globes and Grammys, the Academy got the last word in cinema. Airing last night, the 2024 Oscars went out with a bang: Oppenheimer won big. The atomic thriller was lauded with wins for Best Picture, Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing, and Best Score, while Christopher Nolan, Cillian Murphy, and Robert Downey Jr. took home gold statues for Best Director, Best Lead Actor, and Best Supporting Actor, respectively.
While Oppenheimer came the closest to sweeping, plenty of other films enjoyed a moment in the sun. Ariana Grande presented Billie Eilish with Best Original Song for the ethereal Barbie anthem “What Was I Made For?” Elsewhere, Emma Stone snagged her second Best Lead Actress for her work on Poor Things, an upset win over Killers of the Flower Moon’s Lily Gladstone. Remaining major categories — Best Original Screenplay and Best Adapted Screenplay — went to Anatomy of a Fall and American Fiction. Off the stage, an even split of well-tailored suits and thoughtful pops of colour made the ‘best dressed’ competition just as stiff. From Ryan Gosling’s sparkling trim to Colman Domingo’s classic double-breasted jacket, here are our favourite looks from the biggest night in Hollywood.
Ryan Gosling
Though he made headlines for his theatrical on-stage performance of “I’m Just Ken,” Ryan Gosling pulled out all the stops for his red carpet appearance, too. The SHARP cover alum showed off a sultry black Gucci suit with sparkling trim, high-waisted pants, and a matching black shirt. To round out the look, Gosling opted for a simple chain-and-pendant necklace and repped TAG Heuer with a Carrera Plasma Diamant D’Avant Garde on his wrist.
Cillian Murphy
Book For Men cover alum Cillian Murphy called himself “a very proud Irishman” as he graced the stage to accept the Academy Award for Best Lead Actor. Donning a tuxedo and gold brooch by Sauvereign, Murphy’s style evokes the glamour of old Hollywood. Murphy’s stylist Rose Forde told British Vogue: “It’s easy to over-style. But there’s a natural cool with Cillian — an ease and a nonchalance about him. He exudes style over being a ‘fashion guy.'” Forde also said the brooch was a custom piece, adding: “He’s not into bling, so we wanted something very understated and elegant.”
Simu Liu
In the style of Simu Liu’s Ken, the actor gave Ryan Gosling a run for his money on the red carpet. Liu went sans shirt in a suave black suit by Fendi, mastering the art of accessories with two standout pieces. A dazzling brooch — which our editors have identified as the diamond and platinum ‘Imaginary Nature’ by De Beers — held the jacket in place. On his wrist, the Book For Men cover alum turned heads with a sizzling gold-blue The World Is Yours Dual Time Zone watch by Jacob & Co.
Enzo Vogrincic
We’d forgive you if you haven’t heard of Uruguayan actor Enzo Vogrincic (yet). Best known for Society of the Snow, the rising star debuted at the 96th annual Oscars where Society earned a nomination for Best International Feature Film. Vogrincic wore a mountain-range pin to honour the victims of flight 571, whose tragic crash inspired Society. The star elevated his contemporary take on a classic tuxedo look with an Omega de Ville Trésor and gleaming leather boots.
Barry Keoghan
Like the roles that made him famous — Killing of a Sacred Deer, Green Knight, and most recently Saltburn —Barry Keoghan’s ensemble at the Academy Awards was out of left field. Pictured on the red carpet entrance for Vanity Fair’s legendary post-Oscars party, the Irish actor donned a white mesh top underneath a black-and-white jacket, complete with glimmering trim and contrasted by loose-fitting tweed trousers. To liven up the ensemble, Keoghan wore an Omega watch and rose brooch — though his bracelet made the most headlines, allegedly engraved with ‘Sabrina’ for singer-actress Sabrina Carpenter.
Colman Domingo
After Colman Domingo stunned in black evening wear at both the Emmys and Golden Globes, we had high hopes for his appearance at the 2024 Oscars; of course, the 54-year-old actor didn’t disappoint. Ahead of the ceremony, Domingo spoke to Laverne Cox on E! Live from the Red Carpet. Of his look (a custom Louis Vuitton suit, David Yurman jewellery, and an Omega De Ville), Domingo said: “I wanted to just shine like a diamond.” Cox suggested the Louis Vuitton western boots were a nod to Beyoncé’s country era, to which Domingo laughed, “maybe that’s it — maybe that’s exactly what it is.”
Domingo earned his first Oscar nomination for 2023’s Rustin — in the category of Best Lead Actor, no less — and though the award went to Cillian Murphy, Domingo’s energy on the red carpet proved that he’ll surely be back. “I’m a journeyman actor, and I’m someone who’s been just dedicated to the craft of doing work that matters,” Domingo told Cox. “I feel like this shine is for all of us to say: ‘Stay in it, make spaces where there are no spaces, advocate, and own your power.’ I’ve watched you do that in our history, and I’m so grateful that I have colleagues [standing] shoulder-to-shoulder, breaking ceilings, moving the needle, and pushing things forward,” he added.
Matthew McConaughey
Matthew McConaughey looked anything but dazed and confused as he arrived at the Oscars to announce the Best Lead Actor nominees alongside fellow stars Brendan Fraser and Nicholas Cage. Complementing his brown jacket with a pair of bronze shades, the 54-year-old actor was a welcome break from the all-black attire elsewhere on the carpet. Completing the look, McConaughey wore a flashy white dialed Jacob & Co Jean Bugatti wristwatch.
Chris Evans
Chris Evans’ jarring red suit demands attention: custom-made by Dolce & Gabbana, Evans paired the double-breasted jacket with a classic white shirt and slim black tie. To contrast the flashy fabric, Evans opted for a black-strapped IWC Portugieser Automatic and boosted onyx-coloured boots.
Robert Downey Jr
Robert Downey Jr. has been a marquee regular since the 80s, with films like The Pick-up Artist and Less Than Zero setting his star on fire. Until last night, though, he had yet to win an Academy Award. At the 96th ceremony, Downey earned his first Oscar for his on-screen portrayal of Atomic Energy Commission head Lewis Strauss in Oppenheimer. Perhaps it helped that Downey dressed for a winner’s role: zipped patent leather boots, high-waisted trousers in grain de poudre, with a matching jacket over a sleek silk satin shirt. He’s pictured on the red carpet with wife Susan Downey, whom he later thanked on stage, saying: “You loved me back to life, and that’s why I’m here.” Aw.
Lenny Kravitz
This isn’t the first time we’ve featured Lenny Kravitz on our Best Dressed list; his Alexander McQueen look at the 2024 Golden Globes was one for the books, and the 2023 Oscars saw Kravitz sport a deep-cut silk shirt with an elegant Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso. Last night, Kravitz continued the pattern: his trademark massive black shades establish an enigmatic, old-Hollywood mystique. Paired with a double-breasted jacket in striped wool, white silk lavallière-neck shirt, and high waisted striped wool pants held together with a slim patent leather belt, Lenny Kravitz reminded everyone that he’s as much of a legend in fashion as he is in music.
