The New BMW iX Takes AWD to the Next Level
When BMW set out to create its new all-electric Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV), the iX, it approached the design with the same uncompromising philosophy it applies to every new vehicle it creates. Aside from its sustainable electric powertrain, it would need to perform just as well as – if not better than – any other BMW in the lineup. After years of research and refinement, Canadian drivers can now experience the result: the new 2022 BMW iX xDrive50. A game-changing vehicle for the German luxury brand, in addition to expressive design, 516 hp, and an estimated range of up to 475 km, the new iX is packed with cutting-edge technology, like, a single-piece panoramic glass roof with electrochromic shading, the BMW Curved Display, and iDrive 8. Among its most impressive features, however, (and one that Canadians, in particular, will appreciate) is BMW’s intelligent electric xDrive all-wheel-drive system.
The benefits of all-wheel drive in wet, snowy, and icy conditions are well known, but thanks to a host of new technologies and the versatility of an all-electric powertrain, the new BMW iX xDrive50 is designed to exceed expectations on the road. This innovative new xDrive system is powered by two independent electric motors – one at the front wheels and another at the rear – bringing a higher level of precision and efficiency not possible with combustion-engine technology. The electric xDrive system is fully variable, which means it can split torque as needed from pure rear-wheel drive (its most efficient mode) to all-wheel-drive, providing maximum traction when needed. While drivers can manually select which mode they prefer, the iX will also automatically adjust its drive mode and power delivery according to road conditions, leaving you free to concentrate on driving.
Unlike a traditional combustion engine, the cutting-edge electric motors powering the iX can deliver near-instantaneous power to maximize all-wheel drive performance. Created specifically to suit electric powertrains, BMW’s new traction control system quickly and precisely coordinates corrective inputs on both front and rear wheels, ensuring the iX has extra traction when it’s needed, and maximum efficiency the rest of the time.
While the all-wheel-drive system in BMW’s iX xDrive50 is designed to make for a smooth and safe ride in all driving conditions, it doesn’t disappoint where performance is concerned. The iX’s powerful electric motors and traction control system enables impressive straight-line acceleration, even on slippery surfaces. A DSC system selectively applies the brakes on individual wheels to optimize directional stability. In SPORT mode, iX drivers can configure and adjust their desired degree of wheel slip, allowing them to fully experience the vehicle’s pulse-pounding performance. It’s a fun exercise for iX owners, but it also proves that BMW has achieved exactly what it set out to do: to create an EV that’s as nimble and stylish as it is sustainable.
