Nissan Teases Edgy EVs Ahead of the Japan Mobility Show

At the new Japan Mobility Show later this month, Nissan is going big. The brand is rolling out four edgy new “Hyper” concept cars meant to get people excited about the future of electric motoring.

The concepts are being unveiled digitally before the Japan Mobility Show, which takes over from the long-running Tokyo Motor Show. As you might have guessed from the name, the new Mobility Show is a broader event. For its inaugural year, the theme is dreaming big.

“Remember that feeling of being excited about what tomorrow holds? The feeling of dreaming big. We want to recapture that,” the show organizers explain. Nissan has lived up to that challenge with not one but four new concepts making their global debut at the show. Each of the four concepts are tailored to a different, specific demographic.

The Nissan Hyper Urban

The first vehicle, the Nissan Hyper Urban, is aimed at, “urban- and suburban-based professionals who prioritize environmental sustainability,” according to the company. The designers wanted a vehicle that made a bold statement while also blending in to its environment. The lime yellow paint changes colour depending on the angle of light that hits it, making the car either pop out or blend in.

Inside, the front seats can recline and fold into the rear bench, creating a large sofa and an open lounge-like space. Plug the car in at home, and it can become an emergency power backup, or send power back into the grid potentially earning you some money.

In keeping with the sustainability theme, Nissan says the car has been designed with a very long lifespan in mind. By now, over-the-air software updates for vehicles are nothing new, but Nissan envisions updatable hardware too. For example, the company says this car’s interior can be updated with a new instrument panel. (It’s a clever idea that addresses obsolesce, a problem few automakers have yet to tackle.)

The Nissan Hyper Adventure

The second concept to be unveiled, the Nissan Hyper Adventure, is aimed at — you guessed it — adventurers. Its extra-large battery is meant to support extended off-the-grid road trips. If you find yourself in the wilderness, you’ll be grateful that the battery doubles as a portable energy source, powering your campsite, recharging your electric snowmobile, or even powering-up your remote cabin if needed.

The car’s interior is built to hold all manner of outdoor equipment, from tents to skis, and even kayaks. To help you get ready for your adventure, the SUV’s rear bench can flip backwards to create a comfortable seating area in the trunk. Automatic, extendable steps descend from the rear bumper, making getting in and out easier. And, to help outdoorsy folk get a better view of their surroundings, “the instrument panel connects to the bottom of the windshield, serving as a screen with a wide field of view – as if the body of the vehicle is transparent – and seamlessly connects the space inside and outside the car,” explains Nissan.

Since this is a go-anywhere sort of vehicle, it has Nissan’s excellent new e-4ORCE all-wheel drive system, as seen on the 2024 Nissan Ariya.

More To Come

Don’t think these concepts are just fantasies. “The car represents future design and technological capabilities of Nissan’s electric offerings,” the company confirmed.

We don’t yet know exactly what Nissan’s next electric offerings will be, but we know there will be a lot of them. Nissan aims to introduce 27 new electrified models, including 19 new EVs, by 2030.

We’ll be on the ground in Tokyo later this month bringing you all the news from the first ever Tokyo Mobility Show, so watch this space.
