Tyler, the Creator Has Designed the Louis Vuitton Spring 2024 Capsule

“I still can’t believe this one,” musician Tyler, the Creator said of his just-announced Spring 2024 capsule, developed with Louis Vuitton. It’s an understandable sentiment — a collaboration with Louis Vuitton, the pinnacle of high-fashion, is the stuff of dreams. Of course, the Maison doesn’t coast on its reputation. If recent years are any indication, the fashion house is as eager and experimental as ever. When creative director Pharrell Williams tapped his longtime collaborator to propose a capsule, Tyler, the Creator held nothing back.

It’s not his first time working with the Maison: in January 2022, the musician scored Louis Vuitton Men’s show — among the last to feature designs by the late Virgil Abloh. Strings, haunting and extravagant, soared throughout the Carreau du Temple in Paris, augmenting the collection with sound and space.

“Tyler has been my close friend and collaborator for years,” Williams explained. “we’ve always connected on music and design.” Take a look through Williams’ recent shows, and it’s not hard to see the parallels. ‘Prep’ is to Tyler’s capsule as ‘western’ was to Williams’ Fall/Winter 2024. The capsule references preppy aesthetics with cable-knit sweaters, pleated chinos, and windbreakers painted pale pink or electric green.

Both men use archetypes — for Tyler, the prep and Williams, the cowboy — to form the basis for new dress codes. For the Spring 2024 capsule, Tyler drew a new emblem, the Craggy Monogram, by hand. It’s a welcome contrast to straitlaced silhouettes, rejuvenating everything from belts and trousers to down jackets. Traditionally, a ‘preppy’ palette is full of light pastels. Sunny greens, pinks, and blues are featured here, to be sure, but they’re mostly in service of warm chocolate browns and creamy off-whites.

“My main focus was making things I would wear all the time,” the artist added. “I dress the same in a meeting as I do a performance or grocery store trip, so hand drawing the monogram felt like the perfect balance to me.”

Fittingly, the capsule shares a focus on versatility. Puffer jackets, loose-fit slacks, and embossed sweaters easily adapt to their surroundings. A slew of new bags — the Envelope Messenger, Envelope WW, Envelope Pouch, Rush Bumbag, and a dog-shaped strap bag — continue on the path, bridging the gap between timeless and trendy.

The collection’s crown jewel, however, isn’t clothing at all: it’s a chessboard. Featured as part of a surprisingly comprehensive ‘lifestyle’ component, the travel-ready chessboard includes chess pieces hand-sketched by Tyler. Other items include a cereal bowl (with a matching spoon) and myriad golf accessories (a kit, headcovers, and towels).

“The chessboard is one of the greatest things I’ve made,” the musician said in a statement, calling it “definitely my favourite thing from the collection.” Louis Vuitton seems to agree: the Maison likened his designs to melting chocolate. Authentic, hand-sketched chess pieces provide a welcome contrast to the game’s refined and traditional symbols. At once elegant and edgy, the chessboard makes Tyler’s central message clear: this capsule is all about playful prep.

Tyler, the Creator & Louis Vuitton Men’s Spring 2024 Capsule will hit stores and ‘sites in March 2024.
