Christopher Nolan’s Tenet Stars a Bold New Hamilton Watch

One of the most eagerly anticipated films of 2020, Christopher Nolan’s Tenet is a mind-bending thriller about a lone operative (played by John David Washington) racing around the globe (and possibly back in time as well) to avert World War III. Co-starring Michael Caine, Robert Pattinson and Kenneth Branagh, it echoes previous Nolan joints like Memento, Inception and Interstellar with its lush cinematography, frenetic action sequences and a complex plot designed to hold up over multiple viewings. The film is set to premiere in Canada on August 27.

Hamilton has a long history of providing watches for film, from the groundbreaking digital watch featured in 2001: A Space Odyssey to the retro-futuristic Ventura in the Men in Black movies. In addition to his regular team of collaborators, including production designer Nathan Crowley and cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema, when Nolan needed a one-of-a-kind timepiece for the film he sought Hamilton’s help. The watch in Tenet is a take on Hamilton’s Khaki Navy BeLOWZERO Auto, an oversized diver featuring 1000m water-resistance, a helium escape valve and a tough, black-on-black steel PVD case. For the film Crowley and Nolan worked closely with the Swatch Group’s lab in Switzerland over a period of 18 months to develop the piece, which meets the film’s specific visual requirements and plays a vital role in Tenet’s story.

Im always impressed by Hamiltons dedication to excellence and their willingness to think outside the box to create timepieces that do so much more than tell time,” says Crowley, who previously worked with Hamilton on the design of the Khaki Field “Murph”, for 2014’s Interstellar. “Hamilton will always go the extra mile to help design a watch that works for our complex film storylines.”

Ahead of Tenet’s release, Hamilton is offering up a limited-edition watch inspired by the one in the film, customized with a titanium case and equipped with a second hand tipped in red or blue (a nod, Crowley says, to Tenet’s storyline.) While the watch in the film features a digital display, Hamilton is offering this one with a more traditional automatic H-10 movement, complete with an 80-hour power reserve. Limited to just 888 pieces in each colour and priced at $2,730, the watch comes packaged in a unique box inspired by the the film’s colour palette and designed by Crowley himself. Like Tenet, this Hamilton has all of the ingredients of a future classic.
