Your Favourite Sneakers Just Got Better

You don’t mess with the classics, right? And it doesn’t get any more classic than the Converse Jack Purcell: for eight decades, the low-profile canvas sneakers—with their signature “smile” across the toe—have graced the feet of guys like James Dean, Steve McQueen and, of course, the legendary Canadian badminton champ for which they were named. They are, in many ways, a perfect pair of shoes, giving virtually any outfit—from a plain white tee and raw denim jeans to a crisp cotton suit—an air of unequivocal cool.

But the design minds at Converse went ahead and fixed what ain’t broke anyway, giving the iconic kicks a full-scale renovation with 18 new upgrades. And you know what? The gamble paid off. The Jack Purcell Signature hits stores this month, and at $100 bucks a pop, it’s easily the best iteration of the storied sneaker ever produced: the canvas is now two-ply built to Army specifications; the outsole has been given a vintage herringbone pattern inspired by the Purcell archives; and, best of all, the footbed is imbedded with Nike Zoom Air technology for cushiony, modern comfort.

They’re still the same sneakers you’ve been rocking since puberty, but now they’re stronger, smarter and more handsome than ever—just like you. Turns out, messing with the classics isn’t always that bad after all.
