Here’s the Perfect Suit for Dudes Who Don’t Wear Suits

So, you’re a creative. It’s really not as obnoxious as it sounds — you just happened to fall into a more artistic field, and it affords you a certain lifestyle. Your office is a loft, for instance, and there’s no dress code. Most days, you just wear what makes you comfortable: denim, a vintage button-down, those sneakers you copped in Japan. And that does you just fine. Except when it doesn’t.

Because sometimes, you do need to get dressed up a little. Sometimes, you show up to a wedding in your 1970s fatigue jacket, and your better half blows a gasket. What’s the big deal, you think, I’m wearing a tie! Sometimes, you arrive at your nephew’s baptism in a heavyweight loopwheeled sweatshirt, and your sister-in-law asks you to go home and change. But into what? This is what your whole wardrobe looks like!

That needs to change. Don’t worry, we’re not asking you to become a suit — we just think you should own one. And the latest numbers from Californian clothiers Taylor Stitch are a good place to start. Hand-tailored in Portugal in a fourth-generation family-owned suit factory, they’re built to last a lifetime and make you look as handsome as physically possible throughout said lifetime. How? So glad you asked.

There’s the fabric, first of all: it’s a 15-oz. wool melange — blended with just a touch of poly for a bit of added stretch and to keep moths at bay — that’s hefty and warm and just right for fall.

The construction and design are nothing to scoff at either. Lining has been kept to the bare minimum on the jacket, so there’ll be no linebacker shoulders to concern yourself with, and it’ll fall just right through the body. Patch pockets give it a laid-back, old-school vibe — think the kind of thing Steinbeck would’ve worn while smoking roughly 47 cigarettes at his typewriter — and make it feasible to wear it on its own, as a blazer. Same goes for the trousers, which are clean and comfortable and will look (insert fire emoji here) with a crisp white tee on the weekend.

And finally, there’s the fit. It’s real good. Not too trim, not too loose, like it was made just for you. In some ways, it absolutely was, you crazy creative, you. With this baby in your closet, primed and ready for action, you can go back to enjoying those high-concept espresso drinks and talking about the virtues of fixed-gear bicycles without a care in the world.
