The New ‘Ghost in the Shell’ Teaser Has Us Cautiously Optimistic

A brand-new teaser just dropped for Ghost in the Shell, ahead of a longer TV spot set to air during the Super Bowl this coming Sunday. …A trailer for a trailer? That’s right. Welcome to Hollywood, circa 2017.

There isn’t a ton of new footage from the beloved Japanese manga-turned-big-budget blockbuster revealed here — save for a brief glimpse of Scarlett Johansson’s bad-ass cyborg up against what that looks like an upgraded version of the ED-209 from Robocop — but those action-packed 30 seconds are just meant to whet our appetite. And make sure you don’t get up to take a bathroom or beer break when the extended version comes on.

Well, mission accomplished. Because between this new teaser and that first trailer a few months back, consider us mighty interested to see how this all pans out. For every creepy robo-spider geisha and promising Blade Runner vibe, there’s still a whiff or two of Aeon Flux lingering over this thing. Plus, there’s the whole whitewashing controversy that likely isn’t going away any time soon.

But if there’s one thing we are certain of, it’s that Johansson has the action chops needed to pull this potentially dicey proposition off. After years of playing second fourth fiddle in the Avengers, it looks like the actress got tired of waiting around for Marvel to finally give a girl her own action movie and went ahead and found a new franchise to kick some serious ass in. Now we’ll just have to wait and see if the rest of the movie can measure up.
