Givenchy’s Fall/Winter 2019 Menswear Collection Brings the Past Into the Present

The dream of the ’90s is alive in Givenchy’s new ready-to-wear menswear collection. The brand presented its Fall/Winter 2019/20 line today in Paris, and it draws heavily on the past and present. For her first standalone Givenchy menswear show, artistic director Clare Waight Keller has crafted a day-to-night wardrobe that nods to the “maverick individualism of the Nineties,” replete with colour-blocked suits, embellished pieces in embroidered leather, and loose, oversized pieces. The shapes are at once sleek and carefree — peep the ’70s-indebted double-breasted suits and high-waisted, flared trousers, updated with modern fabrics. In a menswear era obsessed with athleisure and streetwear, this is a bold swerve towards flamboyancy and elegance. It’s fashion moving forward. And we’re all for it.
