A Pop of Pink For Tudor’s Black Bay Chronograph

Do you know what it means when a man wears pink? Nothing more (or less) than its wearer intends, really; colours are no longer defined by gender, contrary to what some may still think. The rosy colour, traditionally associated with sunset skies, blooming bouquets, and other romantic affairs, makes itself scarce on the clothing racks, so — whenever it does appear — it’s sure to catch the eye. This head-turning rarity carries a certain significance: when you break the mold, people notice. Painting the beloved Black Bay Chronograph with a dazzling rose-coloured dial, Tudor proudly declares that pink means bold.

The Swiss brand went pink for the first time this year, partnering with Inter Miami CF (Club Internacional de Fútbol Miami) to become the American soccer club’s official timekeeper. The club, dreamed up by soccer (or football, if you prefer) legend David Beckham, has been bright pink since the beginning. Beckham chose the colour to best represent Miami, a city known for its sun-bleached sands and fluorescent street art, but — at least initially — it was a controversial move.

“Drive around Miami and it’s a very recurring colour. At the time, a lot of people were saying ‘don’t go for pink.’ I was the one who said it has to be the main colour,” Beckham told the Times. “I’m actually very proud of it. I am glad I held my nerve and pushed it through.”

Inter Miami CF isn’t the only Tudor partner to embrace pink. Tudor ambassador Jay Chou — a Taiwanese music legend often called the King of Asian Pop — is also cited as an influence. Tudor notes that Chou’s distinctive pink style has “become his signature, recognized by anyone who follows him.” The new, pink-dialled Tudor Black Bay Chronograph is a fitting release for Chou, who frequently sports the 41mm Black Bay in steel.

While we’re on the subject, it wouldn’t be right to omit Tudor’s involvement with the cycling world; the Swiss watchmaker is the official timekeeper of the Giro d’Italia, Italy’s world-renowned cycling race. Along with the title, winning bicyclists receive the much-fancied maglia rosa, a pink jersey that signifies victory at the Giro. Announcing the pink Black Bay Chronograph, Tudor said: “When the leader of the Giro d’Italia puts on the pink jersey, there is no hesitation. The distinction is earned, and the rider is proud to wear pink.”
