What’s in a Screen

Range Rover & SHARP

Reductive, serene, calm, and tranquil is how Geraldine Ingham, managing director of Range Rover, described the Evoque SUV’s new cabin.

The most approachable member of the Range Rover line-up was recently overhauled with a fresh, cutting-edge suite of technologies, all with an eye towards enhancing the experience for both drivers and passengers.

The brain of the new Evoque is Range Rover’s latest Pivi Pro infotainment system, which first debuted on the Velar and now makes its way into the Evoque. Software is one of the stumbling blocks car companies often trip over, but Range Rover did its homework to get this right.

Developing the new Pivi Pro system, Range Rover conducted extensive testing and development work, both digitally and in the real-world with human testers. Their aim was to reduce the amount of time drivers spent interacting with the system, thereby reducing distraction and ensuring simple, streamlined, intuitive operation. The company claims approximately 80 per cent of tasks can be performed within two taps of the home screen.

The result is a system that’s intuitive and easy to use; it offers up the functions and options you want, when you want them, without cluttering the screen with unnecessary distractions. For example, when you’re listening to music, there’s a discreet button in the corner that takes users directly to the sound settings page, where they can tweak the stereo’s sound signature to their hearts’ content. No need to waste time hunting through sub-menus.

As for the stereo itself, the 11-speaker, 400-watt system from historic British audio specialists Meridian Audio is wonderfully crisp and clear. But it’s the optional (and award-winning) Meridian Surround Sound System that really blew our socks off. It’s not just the raw power of 650-watts, 14-speakers and dual-channel sub, but the shocking true-to-life performance that grabbed us. The system, which automatically compensates for the cabin’s acoustics, was designed to deliver a concert-hall experience that envelopes passengers. You’ve really just got to hear it for yourself.

With on-board Wi-Fi available and dual eSIMs, the system provides full access to apps including Deezer and Spotify. Alexa is built-in as well; just say “Alexa” and your virtual assistant can adjust the car’s settings and features all without you having to press a button. The cloud-connectivity also allows for over-the-air updates, which will help keep the system fresh. For example, a recent update added the ability to control the climate system by simply saying, ‘Hey, I’m cold’ or ‘Hey, set the temperature to 21.’

The engineers also considered air-quality within the cabin. A cutting-edge Cabin Air Purification Plus system optimizes the air-quality for passengers while on the move. By monitoring and controlling CO2 levels — using PM2.5 filtration and CO2 management — it promotes a sense of well-being and heightens alertness.

Seamless Integration

Front and centre inside the Evoque’s redesigned cabin is a crisp 11.4-inch curved-glass touchscreen. Upon starting the SUV, at the beginning of every trip, the Pivi Pro system presents a useful “pre-drive” panel, which grants instant access to things like seat heating and window defrosting. Then, once you’re on the move, the pre-drive panel is replaced by a familiar three-panel homescreen.

When the drive is done, an incredible 3D Surround camera system takes the stress out of parking in tight spaces. Thanks to the most comprehensive suite of camera technologies in its class, drivers get a clear 360-degree view of your surroundings. It’s displayed in an interactive 3D image, allowing drivers to see the car from any angle and maneuver accordingly.

Aesthetically, the Pivi Pro systems integrates seamlessly into the warm, minimalist, calming vibe of the rest of the cabin. It’s a much better visual match for the Range Rover’s luxurious cabin than Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, but, of course, both of those systems are available (wirelessly) on the Evoque should you wish to use them. “The original compact luxury Range Rover for the city is even smarter and more sophisticated than its predecessor,” said Geraldine Ingham.
