This Exclusive 1-of-8 Range Rover SV Arete Reimagines 50 Years of Design

Range Rover & SHARP

Following up on the success of the previous generation full-size Range Rover’s graceful elegance required a delicate hand. Likewise, enhancing that design was as much an exercise in restraint as it was inspiration. In the case of the Range Rover SV Arete, the results speak for themselves.

When the new fifth-generation Range Rover debuted, its designers called on fifty years of tradition, then reimagined them. Traditional elements like the falling roofline, clamshell hood, and floating roof are all present, just subtly tweaked for a new era. Everything is polished, with near-invisible panel gaps and flush-closing doorhandles to create an almost unbroken surface look. The front manages to be both formal and reserved, no need for gaping grilles. LED accenting front and rear is slim and modern, but again hinting toward traditional Range Rover attributes. The rear tailgate is split, as is another Range Rover tradition, but the shutlines are nearly invisible.

On this award-winning design, Range Rover’s Bespoke division have practised their art with the limited Arete special edition. Just eight of these SV models will be produced, a first for Range Rover in the Canadian market, each one has been designed to capture the spirit of Whistler, the resort at the highest peak in the Coast Mountain range. Getting the look right was all about blending the details together.

The exterior paint is perhaps more subtle than previous Range Rover SV editions, an icy cool blue plucked from wintry mountains. Dubbed Special Effect Gloss Blue, it sets off the fullsize Range Rover’s sleek flanks to best effect with a shimmering, liquid look. The contrasting grey roof has the appearance of a seam of lighter granite topping an exposed rock face.

The 23” diamond-polished wheels provide the expected curb appeal, but overall the Arete is visually soft-spoken and imposing rather than swaggering. The blue paint extending to the inserts between the wheel spokes is just one subtle touch.

Inside, the Range Rover’s cabin benefits from the airy feel of an ample greenhouse, and of course offers a plenty of passenger space. The Arete is built on the long-wheelbase model with the SV Signature Suite seating for four. This specification allows for maximum rear passenger comfort and legroom.

The lighter blue interior provides a more warm, lighthearted, and luxurious contrast to its reserved exterior. Supple Liberty Blue near aniline leather runs throughout the cabin, with matching blue carpets, and numbered treadplates. Overall the cabin feel is uncluttered and refreshing, but also thoroughly modern with twin touchscreens for rear passengers, and a central 13.1” touchscreen up front. Contrasting accents are charcoal-hued textiles from Kvadrat, and natural-finish Wenge hardwood with metal inlay.

Kvadrat is a Danish textile manufacturer that has worked with Range Rover since the launch of the Velar in 2017. Its wool blend is available only on the highest specification models, and here it provides a richly textured element throughout the interior, including Arete-specific scatter pillows.

The Arete is intended to encompass the spirit of being in the mountains and thus that theme is stitched right into the leatherwork of the seats. The V-shaped motif is found on the upper seatbacks, and echoed in the wood of the centre console in a mirror image. It’s another subtle nod to just how special this limited-edition Range Rover is.
