Loro Piana Celebrates Its Centennial in Shanghai

Over its rich 100-year history, Loro Piana’s connection to China has proven a foundational relationship. It is, after all, where the brand’s reputation for unparalleled cashmere sourcing and production began. To celebrate this partnership and, of course, its centennial, Loro Piana hosted its first-ever exhibition at the Museum of Art Pudong in Shanghai. It also marks the first time the museum has hosted a luxury house. Named “If You Know, You Know. Loro Piana’s Quest for Excellence,” the exhibition pays homage to the maison’s history and heritage, its savoir-faire from heirloom raw materials to finished garments, and its unique, six-generation family legacy.

On view until May 5, the exhibition commenced with a gala event the night before the opening, with friends of the brand — including decorated actor Jeremy Strong — travelling in to attend. Both the gala and exhibition sought to tell the century-long story of Loro Piana through a combination of archival documents, materials, artworks, heirloom fabrics, and 33 specially created dramatic silhouettes.

Across more than 1,000 square metres spanning three galleries housing 15 rooms, each space accompanies visitors into the world of the Italian label with an expertly curated array of materials, textures, and colours chosen to reflect its DNA. The spaces feature soft carpets and CashFur-lined walls, while natural materials like wood, leather, brass, and sampietrini stone create a warm palette of vivid colours, light tones, and shades of beige. Curated by Judith Clark, a professor of fashion and museology at University of the Arts London, the exhibition offers a seamless dialogue between yesterday and today.

The gala itself also marked a celebration of both Loro Piana’s future as well as its storied past, with guests exploring old photos, early documents, sample books, weaving manuals, and administrative logs that chronicle the origin story of what was once a small, pioneering family brand. Today, Loro Piana has evolved into a global symbol of Italian excellence, but “If You Know, You Know. Loro Piana’s Quest for Excellence” takes guests back to the foundation that built such a reputation, grounded in understated elegance, distinctive style, and lasting relationships.
