Humans have been using steel for over 4,000 years, and in that time, it has served us well in everything from samurai swords to skyscrapers and, of course, watches. Stainless steel, a mix of iron and chromium, was perfected in the early 20th century and proved the ideal material for the new breed of rugged tool watches created in the 1950s and 1960s. Titanium, a naturally occurring element that’s as strong as steel and up to 40% lighter, was first put to commercial use in the 1950s and didn’t find its way into watches until the 1970s. That helps explain why titanium watches took a while to catch on but catch on they certainly have. In recent years, watch brands of every stripe have employed the metal in a wide range of pieces, from skeletonized complications to dive watches. These are some of our favourites.
