SHARP x Hamilton

The most beloved watches are often the ones with the best origin stories. Whether it’s a brilliant designer sketching a future icon on a napkin, or a watch created to meet the needs of astronauts, these stories offer a connection to a different time and place, or even a different world. Such is the case with the Hamilton Murph collection, which recently expanded to include a new blue gradient dial and a steel bracelet.

The Murph was initially designed as a prop for Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar, a 2014 sci-fi movie about a group of astronauts who travel through a wormhole in space to find a new habitable home for humanity. Hamilton has a long history in Hollywood, having provided watches for more than 500 films since the 1930s, including the Pulsar worn by Roger Moore in Live and Let Die and the American Classic Boulton Mechanical worn by Indiana Jones in 2023’s Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. For Interstellar, however, Nolan asked Hamilton to produce a new design that could embody the film’s themes of time, love, and sacrifice. The result was a take on Hamilton’s best-selling Khaki Field, with cathedral hands, a 42mm steel case, and a black croc-embossed leather strap. Like most film props, the watch was meant to be a one-of-one creation, but after the film’s release, it took on a life of its own.

Five years after Interstellar’s release, and following much lobbying by the film’s many fans, Hamilton officially added the watch to its collection. Dubbed the Murph in honor of Murphy “Murph” Cooper, the film’s protagonist played by Jessica Chastain and Mackenzie Foy, the watch quickly earned a devoted following among watch enthusiasts and film buffs alike. While the first edition of the Murph was a faithful reproduction of the one worn on screen, watch enthusiasts soon began to lobby Hamilton to add a smaller case size to the collection, a request the watchmaker was only too happy to grant in 2022.

The newest Murph retains its signature cathedral hands, Arabic numerals, and steel case, but it is now available with a textured gradient dial inspired by the journey of an interstellar comet. Fading from a luminous blue center to its black edges, the new dial evokes the vastness of deep space, with a stardust-inspired grained texture that adds visual depth. The newest Murph is also available with either a black leather strap or a stainless steel bracelet, increasing its versatility and wearability. One of seven variants in the ever-expanding Murph universe, the new model is just the latest chapter in one of the watch world’s greatest stories.
