Home of the Week: Hadaway House, Whistler

Winter has finally arrived in earnest, and there’s no better place to spend the ski season than a custom home wedged into the steep slopes of Whistler valley.

The Hadaway House, named for its owners, had specific design challenges due to the surrounding topography — precarious boulders that fall into the vast panoramic basin. Sharp geometric panes match the declivitous land in aesthetic, with the bonus of answering the “need to shed snow from the roof into appropriate storage areas,” according to Patkau Architects.

Privacy is attained through discreet entrance areas — including the garage door, which is covered in the same wooden slats as the rest of the façade. There’s also a service space where your freshly snow-soaked clothes and equipment can be laundered and dried before you even step in the house, keeping your mountaintop sanctuary barefoot friendly.

The concrete structure encasing the lower structure provides the balance required between insulation and ventilation for drastic seasonal changes, making this the most ideal getaway all year round.
