Moving from Monaco to beautiful Barcelona, Formula One put on yet another spectacle at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. Heading into the weekend, excitement grew among long-time fans, as this track is the preferred pre-season testing circuit due to its complex corners and long straights, making it the definitive track to show who’s strongest in terms of aerodynamic and power unit packages.
The Mercedes of George Russell and Kimi Antonelli were the obvious choice for the weekend after their onslaught of victories and podiums, but after the last race in Monaco, and improvements as the season goes on, the Ferrari of Lewis Hamilton is breathing down the necks of both Mercedes drivers, and Hamilton is known to be very quick around the Spanish circuit with an impressive seven race wins in his career.
Qualifying

With the season displaying the dominant nature of Mercedes in all sessions of the weekend, many speculated it would be the same result in qualifying, but there were some surprises right around the corner. In Q1, the Mercedes of George Russell showed phenomenal pace, but the Ferrari of Hamilton was even faster, exiting Q1 in P1 with Russell in P2 (+0.092), Leclerc in P3 (+0.339), and Antonelli right behind in P4 (+0.352); Mercedes vs. Ferrari continues.
In Q2, Russell had more in the tank, placing his Mercedes at the top of the leaderboard, but Leclerc’s Ferrari was hot on his heels in P2 (+0.053), followed by Antonelli chasing Leclerc in P3 (+0.067). Hamilton’s Ferrari seemed to fall slightly off the pace in P5 (+0.190), but it was still a battle between Mercedes and Ferrari, with Leclerc in the middle of the Mercedes sandwich.
Q3 would be shocking for Ferrari fans and a massive disappointment for Charles Leclerc. While approaching the apex of Turn 4 (Repsol), Leclerc noticed a slight snap of oversteer. He managed to correct it, but due to the correction, he encountered a massive reaction of countersteer, which he couldn’t recover from, leading his Ferrari off course and straight into the barriers, bringing an end to his day after such a dominant performance and bringing out the red flag to put a halt to the session.
With the red flag now over, it was time to get back on track, and for a short time it seemed like the McLarens of Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris found some extra oomph, but alas, we went back to our regularly scheduled programming: Russell, Hamilton, and Antonelli fighting for the top spot. Lap after lap, times improved, and we’d see Russell cross the line in P1 with an impressive 1:14.679, Hamilton in P2 (+0.064), and Antonelli in P3 (+0.319). Lando Norris and his McLaren found some extra pace at the end to bring it home P4, Verstappen fought hard to bring his Red Bull P5, and teammate Isack Hadjar in P6. It was another rough qualifying session for Oscar Piastri and his McLaren in P7, Liam Lawson bringing his Racing Bull to P8, Nico Hulkenberg and Audi with an impressive P9, and a disappointing P10 after his accident for Charles Leclerc.
Race

Lights out and away we go. George Russell got off the line beautifully, but the Ferrari of Hamilton got an even better start, attacking the Mercedes through Turns 1-3 with an opportunity to make a move into Turn 4, but Russell held his line beautifully. Charles Leclerc launched off the line to make up three positions between the start and Turn 4, showing his pace early and what we could expect throughout the race.
It was the Isack Hadjar highlight reel for a portion of the race. After a poor start, Hadjar dropped from P6 to P13, and the overtaking masterclass he put on after that was spectacular: passing on the outside of Turn 2 and Turn 4 and through the inside of Turn 13—a corner where no one usually dares to pass.
Back to the action at the front, it was the standard battle we’ve seen all season: Russell vs. Antonelli. After multiple laps of Antonelli attempting to get around his teammate, Russell would hold him off to maintain the lead, until pit stops would later shake things up and bring a whole new challenge: Lewis Hamilton.

Lap 38 would see the Mercedes of Antonelli pit for fresh tires, and the Ferrari of Hamilton scream down the main straight to take the lead. Here’s where the tables turn. On lap 40, the Aston Martin of Fernando Alonso would be seen stationary, bringing out the virtual safety car, allowing Hamilton to take the opportunity to pit for fresh tires and to maintain his lead out front, giving him an extreme advantage against the following Mercedes.
By Lap 61, the battle of Russell vs. Antonelli continued for P2 after Hamilton’s Ferrari pulled away with authority to an impressive 15-second lead. Antonelli, hot on the heels of Russell, finally had his opportunity to make the pass through Turn 3. However, entering Turn 5 just a lap later would see Antonelli pull to the side of the track and park the car; an unknown electrical failure would put an end to his impressive weekend and his win streak. That same lap, the Ferrari of Charles Leclerc would have a power steering failure, sending Leclerc through the grass before Turn 3 and ultimately ending his weekend.

The last lap: Hamilton bringing the car through Turns 13 and 14. Fans on their feet. Even if you aren’t a fan of Ferrari, you felt the energy and emotion: the return of Lewis Hamilton to the top step of the podium and his first win as a Ferrari driver. After the trials and tribulations of 2025, Lewis Hamilton is once again a race winner, increasing his lead on the all-time wins list to 106 victories in his career and adding to his already impressive list of podium finishes, making the 2026 Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix his 206th podium finish.
The domination of Mercedes has come to an end at the hands of Lewis Hamilton and the phenomenal pit strategy of Ferrari. With an updated car and the capability to compete with the Silver Arrows, Ferrari has a great chance at fighting for the Constructors’ Championship, and this may be a turn of the tide, as Lewis Hamilton finds his confidence once again. It was a beautiful race from start to finish, and seeing the 7-time World Champion cross the line with such a great lead was nostalgic. Let’s see what Austria has in store on June 28th.
