Here’s what we’re reading today:

1. Changes to union bargaining mean end to austerity in Ontario

“Premier Kathleen Wynne is signalling the end to an era of austerity by lifting the ‘net-zero’ provision on public-sector contracts.

“With the Liberals set to balance the books in the 2017-18 budget, Wynne on Monday confirmed that negotiations with public servants will no longer be conducted under the constraint of net-zero bargaining.”

2. Millions in the US have climbed out of poverty

“The Caicedos are among the 3.5 million Americans who were able to raise their chins above the poverty line last year, according to census data released this month. More than seven years after the recession ended, employers are finally being compelled to reach deeper into the pools of untapped labor, creating more jobs, especially among retailers, restaurants and hotels, and paying higher wages to attract workers and meet new minimum wage requirements.”

+1: The millennial housing trend is just a repeat of the Middle Ages.

3. Huge jets of water are spewing out of Jupiter’s moon Europa

“Further evidence has been obtained to show that Jupiter’s icy moon Europa throws jets of water out into space. Scientists first reported the behaviour in 2013 using the Hubble telescope, but have now made a follow-up sighting. It is significant because Europa, with its huge subsurface ocean of liquid water, is one of the most likely places to find microbial life beyond Earth.”

4. What to expect in tonight’s first presidential debate

“If Mr. Trump is to convince those voters who have doubts about his fitness for high office, but are uneasy with Mrs. Clinton, the three debates represent his best opportunity to prove he can be trusted to serve as a head of state.”

5. Disney is thinking about buying Twitter

“The company has a history of investing in digital media properties including Hulu, Vice, and streaming service provider BAMTech, which provides the technical backbone to products like HBO Now. Despite its film pedigree, Disney’s biggest business happens to be cable TV with properties like ESPN and ABC. Yet younger audiences have for years been abandoning cable for services like Snapchat, YouTube, and other forms of social and online media.”
