The Air Canada Centre Will Be Renamed Scotiabank Arena, and People Aren’t Happy About It
Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment announced today that the Air Canada Centre — home of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Toronto Raptors — will become the Scotiabank Arena when a 20-year agreement takes effect next July. Hmm.
Our immediate reaction:
No word yet on the financial aspects of the agreement, but it’s safe to assume it’s worth about a Mayweather-McGregor fight more than the $30-million Air Canada paid for their original 20-year deal. Maybe MLSE needed this money to offset the expectedly astronomical future contract of Auston Matthews?
Maybe Scotiabank, no longer with its fingers in Nuit Blanche or Caribana, was feeling antsy and needed something else to desecrate?
“You’re richer than you think” is Scotiabank’s tagline. That should go over well with Leafs fans used to being gouged at every possible corner.
The early reaction from the people of Twitter? Not great, Bob.
if they think we're gonna start calling it Scotiabank Arena instead of the ACC, they're smoking crack🤡

I am NOT calling the ACC the Scotiabank Arena. It's not happening. I refuse.

It's been the Air Canada Centre since I was born and it's gonna be the Air Canada Centre until I die. Get out here with Scotiabank Arena wtf
