Eyes Over Egypt: Dior Returns to the Desert for Its Fall 2023 Menswear Show
This past weekend in Giza, Egypt, Dior took to the vast expanse of the desert for the unveiling of its highly anticipated Fall 2023 men’s collection. With the Great Pyramid of Giza as its iconic backdrop, the legendary fashion house trotted out its latest collection in typically grand manner — 75 models wearing 75 looks, in honour of Dior’s 75 years. Touching on their history while looking boldly ahead to the future, it encompassed technical outerwear and couture tailoring, military coats and pleated kilts.
One of the most striking things about this menswear collection is the emphasis on contrasting colour palettes. While the overarching theme skewed toward neutral tones, with tans, blacks, and charcoal greys presiding, shocking pops of colour made eye-popping statements. Bright canary yellows, deep creamy oranges, and celestial blends of reds and blues jumped out on the runway like a sunset peaking over the horizon.
For their part, Dior chose to emphasize another contrast, between the past and the present (and often beyond). The combination of technical features, such as militaristic steels and pieces that evoked body armour, with long, flowing silhouettes, made for an inspired interpretation of contemporary masculine style. Meanwhile, the wool demi-kilts on display reintroduced aspects of the famed Dior pleated skirt of the 1950s, the Bonne Fortune. With such visionary flourishes, it’s a collection to remember.
