8 Best-Dressed Men of the 2024 Emmys

This year’s Emmy Awards were only the second in the ceremony’s history to be postponed from their usual September slot. Instead, the 2024 Emmys took place during the jam-packed awards season, sitting squarely between the Golden Globes and the Grammy Awards. To stand out is a tall order, but it’s one the Emmys managed to fulfill. Between cementing Sir Elton John’s legacy by granting him EGOT status (that’s an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony), and a nostalgic reunion between Amy Poehler and Tina Fey for one more Weekend Update skit, the show was a hit. And that’s before mentioning Dahmer actress Niecy Nash-Betts’ anthemic acceptance speech, which is better quoted than summarized: “I want to say to myself in front of all these beautiful people, ‘Go on girl with your bad self. You did that.’ Finally, I accept this award on behalf of every Black and brown woman who has gone unheard yet overpoliced. Like Glenda Cleveland. Like Sandra Bland. Like Breonna Taylor. As an artist, my job is to speak truth to power, and baby, I’ma do it ’til the day I die.” Damn. That’s good.

Fittingly, the guests of the night pulled out all the stops; perhaps that’s an argument for a postponed Emmys — when it’s winter in Hollywood, everyone is already pulling couture off the racks. Largely, the red carpet looks stuck to the classics: evening-wear staples like black suits and shiny boots were in full force. That said, our favourite looks were those that elevated Old-Hollywood suiting with dazzling accessories. Ranging from the extravagant (Kieran Culkin’s opal and diamonds, we’re looking at you) to the quietly elegant (James Marsden’s OMEGA De Ville Trésor), watches, brooches, and gemstone bracelets owned the night.

Rob McElhenney

Were the It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia cameras still rolling as Rob McElhenney whipped out his phone to watch last night’s Eagles game? If not, they should’ve been — streaming the NFL during the Emmys is a classic Mac move. Antics aside, though, it’s safe to say that McElhenney wasn’t fully in character: his three piece ensemble, complete with shiny leather boots and a bow tie, made for an ultra-polished evening look. McElhenney wore an IWC Portugieser Perpetual Calendar 42 Boutique Edition to complement the suave, cocktails-and-caviar vibe.

Theo James took to the red carpet in all-black attire, with a single pop courtesy of the OMEGA Constellation Globemaster 41 mm. Gleaming peaked lapels accentuated the smart silhouette of his jacket, while sleek pants tapered down to sharp platform shoes, adding a much-welcome edge to his outfit. Polished as he is, fatherhood is keeping the White Lotus actor busy: “We have a 4-month-old. We’re in the thick of it,” James said on the red carpet. That’s all the more reason to lean into a classic look — the monochrome, jet-black finish is simple and understated, yet always flattering.

Colman Domingo

Colman Domingo’s take on classic evening-wear is, unmistakably, still ‘Colman Domingo’s take.’ Expert tailoring pulls the whole look together: a sleek, form-fitting coat, complete with a pearl button closure and black satin lapels, droops just past the knees. Meanwhile, steep-wedged boots ensure the jacket doesn’t drown his figure, tempering its tall silhouette with a sharp cut and boosted heels. Dark fabrics allow the details to take centre stage: on the lapels, a stunning brooch commands attention. Shimmering pearls pull colour from a crisp white shirt and gold necklace, respectively, allowing the ensemble to sparkle together. As if that wasn’t enough, Domingo wore an OMEGA De Ville Trésor 40mm, with a diamond bezel to boot. With another outfit, it might’ve been too much, but the custom evening coat and black trousers provide just enough contrast to let his accessories shine.

Kieran Culkin

He might be holding a literal Emmy in the shot above, but Kieran Culkin’s numerous rings compete for our attention. And, if you look just a bit longer, you’ll notice a pin on his chest; that’s courtesy of Beverly Hills jeweller Martin Katz. The ‘Antique Shell Motif Stick Pin’ is laced with cabochon opal and diamonds, shimmering like moonlight over water against Culkin’s black jacket. With standout gems like that, it’s only fitting that the Succession star wore an IWC Portugieser Automatic 40 to finish off the look.

Michael Trotter Jr.

Grammy-nominated husband and wife duo The War and Treaty honoured the late Matthew Perry with a heartfelt performance at the Emmys alongside Charlie Puth. Michael Trotter Jr. opted for a retro-style look, complete with thick-rimmed glasses. With its unique, nostalgic take on pastels, it’s no surprise that the look — a textured, dust-rose jacket with black framed lapels and matching black trousers — was custom made by luxury tailor Don Murphy. We could take or leave the chains, but his black boots and shiny Oris ProPilot X Calibre 115 more than made up for it.

James Marsden

“It’s nice to ride the big wave all at once, actually,” James Marsden said of attending back-to-back award shows. He’s been riding the wave for some time: you might know him from 2000’s X-Men, 2008’s Hairspray, or recent gigs like Dead to Me (2020-2023). It’s fitting, then, that he wore a seasoned actor’s clothes: timeless peaked lapels, tapered trousers, and a crisp white shirt. Nominated for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series thanks to his work on the Truman-Show-lite comedy Jury Duty, Marsden’s sleek square-toed boots were a cheeky nod to his character. To finish it off, Marsden wore an OMEGA De Ville Trésor 40mm in steel on a leather strap.

Bill Hader

After an uncharacteristically high-profile night at the Golden Globes, Bill Hader showed up to the Emmys wearing an eye-catching OMEGA De Ville Trésor 40mm in steel on a black leather strap. The dial popped next to his charcoal suit, with decidedly “scholar-chic” glasses and an understated black bowtie to balance it out. And, although he lost Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series to Jeremy Allen White, Bill Hader shared a sweet embrace with Ali Wong to celebrate her win in the Limited Series category.

Adam DiMarco

Adam DiMarco found his footing on HBO’s White Lotus, playing the gullible (if well-intentioned) Albie Di Grasso. Just ahead of the Emmys, Adam DiMarco chatted with CTV’s E-Talk about the show: “nowadays, you know, our attention spans are all over the place. [White Lotus] kind of rewards you for slowing down.” It’s true — the limited series rewards attention to detail, sprinkling clues alongside humorous quips as the murder-mystery plot unfolds. Perhaps director Mike White rubbed off on DiMarco’s stylist: his Emmy look is all in the details. The closed, double-breasted Dior Men’s jacket puts all the focus on his notched black lapels; they form a V-shape to frame his crisp white collar. Buttoned high, the top half gives a preppy, uniform-like vibe. Still, loose-fitting trousers keep the look fresh by softening the silhouette. Shiny black derbies and a regal, CD-embellished brooch tie it together; a seamless blend of trendy and elegant.
