Best for: condo garages, city life, getting things done with style.

It may be how you start the Range Rover ownership journey, but there’s nothing entry-level about the newly redesigned Range Rover Evoque. It’s a machine for young entrepreneurs, innovators and people with busy lives who make things happen and look good doing it. All the cutting-edge tech inside isn’t there for looks though, it’s there to help make life smoother, whether you’re pulling into a tight spot (thank you 3D Surround View and ClearSight Ground View), putting on a podcast (the 11.4 inch curved touchscreen with Amazon Alexa makes everything easy) or avoiding a trip to the garage (thank heavens for over-the-air software updates). All-wheel drive and the Ingenium 2.0-litre turbo engine and Range Rover’s legendary off-road knowhow put the Evoque among the most capable SUVs in its class.

The key idea here is modern luxury. Range Rover’s design team gave the redesigned Evoque perfect proportions, with space enough for four adults in comfort (plus a fifth in a pinch). Taut surfaces and clean lines — check out those flush door handles — make for a timeless design. Details like the optional Kvadrat wool-blend fabric seats and bronzed interior detailing add to the sustainable, luxurious vibe. There’s simply not a bad angle on the latest Evoque; it makes a strong first impression in any scenario. And, to be honest, there aren’t many SUV in this class you could say that about.

Best for: architects, designers, young and old, anybody who appreciates fine modernist design.

Think of it like the Evoque’s more grown-up sibling. The Velar is larger, more spacious and more comfortable for longer journeys, ideal for anyone with longer commutes or longer adventures in mind. It rides a little smoother on optional air suspension and is quieter thanks to a Meridian sound system that’s available with active noise cancelling. The Velar also goes a little quicker than its smaller sibling due to the optional the 6-cylinder engine cranking out 335 horsepower. That’s right, unlike the Evoque, the Velar can also be had with the glorious Ingenium 3.0-litre mild-hybrid engine as an upgrade from the 2.0-litre four-cylinder. While the latter is more than up to any task, the former makes every task that much more fun. The added feeling of effortless power, of extra muscle, is instantly noticeable in the six-cylinder Velar.

The Velar is arguably Range Rover’s most avant-garde design, both inside and out. A flowing wave of wood veneer down the center console is topped with a new curved-glass 11.4” curved-glass Pivi Pro infotainment screen that appears to float above the dash. It’s effortlessly kept up to date through over-the-air updates. Crisp LED headlights with signature DRL and de-saturated LED taillights makes it stand out on the road. For the cabin, owners can select an interior bathed in leather or Kvadrat Ultrafabric, which, with its diamond herringbone perforation, makes sustainable luxury look better than ever.

Best for: Driving enthusiasts, respectable speed demons and families who want to go places fast.

If Batman had to live in the real world we bet he’d opt for the Range Rover Sport SV. It’s the most performance-oriented machine in Range Rover’s line-up, packed with too many mind-blowing pieces of brilliant engineering and cool tech to properly cover here. Note the optional 23-inch carbon-fibre wheels that save precious pounds and improve handling, or the carbon hood or giant ceramic brakes providing world class stopping power. There’s the world-first 6D Dynamics hydraulically-linked air suspension system that keeps this big machine on an even keel during hard cornering. We’ve tried it and it’s borderline miraculous. There’s also next-generation multi-sensory audio Body and Soul Seat (BASS) technology, which makes this thing sound like a club on wheels and hood. The crown jewel though has to be the V8 twin-turbo mild-hybrid engine cranking out 626 horsepower. The Sport SV manages to be both stealthy and menacing, monstrously powerful but still an upstanding gentleman.

Of course, if you’d rather something slightly less extreme than the full-fat SV, the Range Rover Sport is also available with a wide range of other engines, from the 395-hp 6-cylinder, to the 454-hp plug-in hybrid P460e and a 523-hp V8. There’s a perfect fit for every driver.

Best for: celebrities, foreign diplomats, C-suite execs, big families and those who accept no compromise.

This is the big one. It’s quite literally the Range Rover. Since it hit the scene in 1970, the Range Rover has been the SUV against which all other luxury SUVs are judged. It arguably helped create the market it now dominates. Vehicles don’t get more broadly capable than this and, as a result, the full-size Range Rover is ideal for pretty much anyone. If you’re looking for a chauffeur driven chariot that will carry you in the lap of luxury, the Range Rover Long Wheelbase with the optional Signature Suite — featuring first-class style thrones, electronically deployable Club Tables, secure storage and a Champagne fridge with matching Dartington crystal glassware — is the Range Rover for you. If, on the other hand, you need additional seating to carry your kids and their friends and a load of sports gear, the Long Wheelbase Seven Seat model would be most appropriate.

The five-seat Long Wheelbase model is ideal for smaller families with young kids, big strollers and even bigger car seats. The non-stretched models are a bit more low-key, for those who’d prefer to fly slightly more under-the-radar. The standard models are also slightly easier to wheel around in tight spaces and parking garages, although in either case all-wheel steering makes the big Range effortless to manoeuvre in any situation.

As for engines, for everyone who lives in or around a big city, you may consider the plug-in hybrid Range Rover P550e for its switchable EV driving mode. The P400 mild hybrid six-cylinder is the frugal option, but those that need to hurry should look to the 4.4-litre V8 engine of the P530. The P615 mild-hybrid motor in the range-topping Range Rover SV is the pinnacle of the line-up, for drivers who simply must have the best of the best. As if that’s not enough, a battery-powered Range Rover Electric is due out sometime next year.
