Toronto’s Enigma: Inside the Newly-Renovated Yorkville Restaurant

The great irony of Enigma — the modern international restaurant nestled in Toronto’s historic Yorkville neighbourhood — is that it holds very little mystery. Yes, its relatively unassuming position below the bustle of Bloor Street, hidden along the picturesque brick buildings of St. Thomas Street, leaves one wondering what lies beyond the red velvet rope at its front door. But upon entering, all its ambiguity melts away. After all, Enigma knows precisely what it is and who it’s catering to: it is one of the city’s most luxuriant experiences, made for those seeking culinary grandeur in its highest form.

Stepping into the restaurant, which received its first Michelin star in 2022, there’s a sharp contrast between the large glittering ordainments above the bar and the dark tones emanating formal elegance to an otherwise modern space. After a recent renovation and expansion to Enigma’s interior, SHARP visited the restaurant this spring to experience a seasonal blind tasting menu led by Chef Quinton Bennett and discover the unique elements that make Enigma so special.

The first of those elements is Enigma’s Macallan Lounge, created to be Toronto’s first exclusive lounge dedicated to The Macallan whisky. This intimate, six-seater space offers a private experience where guests can explore Macallan’s exceptional single malts, paired perfectly with Michelin-starred cuisine, as explained before the dinner by John MacPherson, Brand Specialist, Eastern Canada at The Macallan.

The curated menu features elegant dishes like Antonius Oscietra Caviar and Highland Beef Wellington, paired with whisky cocktails like The Macallan Old Fashioned, Paper Plane, and the iconic Macallan 18.

Entering the main dining room for Chef Bennett’s six-course meal, the dark bar area opens up into a sunlit room featuring floor-to-ceiling windows, rich royal blue curtains, and a second bar adorned with gold accents, filling the space with brightness. The menu itself blends the finest local and international ingredients, delivering a dining experience that is both refined and globally inspired, with the tasting menu featuring Cornish hen curry, Tajima wagyu, and fresh steelhead salmon.

Under Bennett, whose international resume and well-traveled kitchen team bring a wealth of global influences, Enigma crafts dishes that reflect its atmosphere: poised, delicate, and intricately detailed.
