In Toronto, September is cinematic. On King Street West, the atmosphere grows thick with anticipation, sidewalks bustling with filmgoers and food trucks. Running from September 4th to 14th, the 50th Toronto International Film Festival is our city’s crown jewel — and the TIFF Tribute Awards, taking over the Fairmont Royal York Hotel, epitomize the excitement. On September 7th, SHARP attended the ceremony as a guest of Rolex, the exclusive Presenting Partner of the TIFF Tribute Awards.

“We’re thrilled to announce this year’s recipients, each of whom has left an indelible mark on the cinematic landscape: from the commanding talent of Lee Byung Hun; the visionary imagination of maestro Guillermo del Toro; the evocative storytelling of HIKARI; to the incomparable career of actor, filmmaker, and icon Jodie Foster,” said TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey. “We’re honoured to welcome these exceptional artists to Toronto.”

Alongside this year’s honourees, Brendan Fraser — who received the Tribute Performer Award in 2022 — attended as the honorary chair. Calling Fraser “a beloved artist,” Bailey added that his “warmth, generosity, and passion for storytelling” capture the spirit of TIFF. Fraser returned the sentiment: “I’m honoured to return to Toronto once again,” he said in a statement. “TIFF has been meaningful to me and to be in this role during the Festival’s landmark 50th edition is a privilege. TIFF continues to champion the kind of bold storytelling that brings people together, and I’m thrilled to celebrate this year’s Tribute recipients.”

Together, the honourees display the diversity of the modern film industry, from up-and-coming producers to longtime A-listers. Writer, director, and producer HIKARI received the Emerging Talent Award; during the festival, she debuted Rental Family: a new film starring Brendan Fraser. Elsewhere, Jodie Foster earned the Share Her Journey Groundbreaker Award — presented by Joanna Griffiths and the Women of Knix — while the iconic Guillermo del Toro accepted the TIFF Ebert Director Award with a smile. del Toro’s commitment to TIFF runs deep: this month, he presented a TIFF Cinematheque series on Canadian horror and showed his new, live-action feature, Frankenstein, at the festival. Other winners include Channing Tatum (TIFF Tribute Performer Award), Idris Elba (TIFF Tribute Award in Impact Media), and Catherine O’Hara (TIFF Norman Jewison Career Achievement Award).

The gala is TIFF’s largest annual fundraiser; proceeds are used to develop talent and enhance community ties across the Toronto film scene. Passionate speeches and celebrations symbolized core values shared by Rolex — a first-time partner of the Tribute Awards — and TIFF: growing talent, building community, and the pursuit of cinematic excellence.

Filled with floral bouquets and gold adornments, the ceremony saw names like Kirsten Dunst, Eugene Levy, Mia Goth, Dwayne Johnson, and Oscar Isaac in the crowd. After half a century of legacy-building, the opulent evening proved just how much TIFF — and Toronto — mean to cinema.
