A typical rule when choosing a scarf for a more formal setting — or any occasion where you find yourself wearing a jacket and tie — is to not force the issue. It might sound like a contradiction, given the position of scarves as statement pieces. But just because an item can be a showstopper, it doesn’t mean it always should be. Still, you can elevate the accessory by opting for a silk, cashmere, or merino material with a simple wrap that doesn’t impede a tie.
