It may come as a surprise that the world’s oldest international sports competition doesn’t take place on a track, a field, or a road. Instead, it takes place on the high seas. Synonymous with daring adventure, cutting-edge nautical engineering and design, and gripping competition, the legend of America’s Cup spans three centuries. In an attempt to document such iconic moments, Louis Vuitton and Taschen have come together to trace the evolution of the race in a new book, America’s Cup.
The book traces the storied evolution of the Cup, from its inception in 1851 to the thrilling events of today’s competitions, culminating in this year’s Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup. With a collection of technical drawings, rare, previously unpublished photographs, and detailed data, this volume captures the essence of sailing’s most coveted prize.

“This book is a unique journey through the history of the America’s Cup, connecting the sea to great discoveries and encounters,” says Pietro Beccari, chairman and CEO of Louis Vuitton. “We are delighted to collaborate with Taschen to highlight this compelling narrative, which resonates with the heritage of Louis Vuitton, a legacy that began in 1854.”
The America’s Cup Limited Edition is limited to 1,000 copies, featuring a carbon fibre bookstand, designed by Marc Newson, that resembles the keel of a sailboat. The cover, also designed by Newson, is crafted from sail fabric and fitted with a custom Louis Vuitton metal closure system.
“The case and stand I designed for the editions are a nod to the awe-inspiring vessels competing in the America’s Cup,” says Newson. “This project has been another wonderful opportunity to work alongside two long-time collaborators, Taschen and Louis Vuitton, to collectively honour this unique event.”
The book itself was edited by renowned sports journalist Pino Allievi, who researched and curated the project for more than six years. In combination with Newson’s design, Allievi brings together the voices of those who have shaped the famed competition over its 174-year history, from boat owners to the daring contenders themselves.
