In the lead-up to Watches & Wonders Geneva, predicting new releases from the world’s top brands has become an annual tradition — but some new watches defy even the wildest speculation. A case in point: the new H. Moser & Cie Streamliner Pump, an integrated bracelet sports watch inspired by the legendary Reebok basketball shoe.

Swiss luxury watchmaker H. Moser & Cie has a reputation for irreverent creations (it is, after all, the first and only brand to craft a watch case out of Swiss cheese) and this year’s new releases prove it hasn’t lost any of its offbeat sense of humour. For those who weren’t around in the early ‘90s, the Reebok Pump was an audacious new sneaker design that used an air pocket inside the shoe (inflatable via a basketball-shaped pump on the tongue) to create a perfect fit — or so the thinking went. In reality, it wasn’t a significant improvement over the conventional laces-and-eyelets system, but its aesthetic charms nonetheless earned it a major share of ‘90s footwear hype, and it remains a streetwear throwback on par with Loony Tunes varsity jackets and Tommy Hilfiger jeans.

Developed in collaboration with Reebok, the Streamliner Pump combines the form of Moser’s signature sports watch with the sneaker’s famous pump-action, using an orange pusher to wind the movement. The Streamliner Pump is available in two versions, white and black, each limited to 250 pieces. Both 40mm cases are crafted from forged quartz fibre, a material that lends them a matte finish with a subtle moiré pattern. The dial is typical Moser — logo-free and austere — which lends the orange power reserve indicator an added pop. Inside is a hand-wound HMC 103 manufacture calibre with 74 hours of power reserve, which can be wound by the pump pusher or the winding crown.

With its clean monochrome look and Hypebeast cred, the Streamliner Pump is easily one of the buzziest new pieces in the H. Moser lineup, but its appeal isn’t limited to the wrist. Included with each purchase will be a matching pair of low-top Reebok Pump sneakers, subtly co-branded with the H. Moser & Cie logo on the sole and the interior lining. It’s the kind of swerve that no one could have predicted, and exactly what we’ve come to expect from a brand that consistently subverts expectations.
