Cartier x SHARP

Of the various Cartier watches frequently spotted, I’ve seen my fair share of Roadsters; the elegance and uniqueness of its tonneau-shaped case make it an easy one to spot on someone’s wrist from a distance. It proved a welcome surprise earlier this year at Watches and Wonders, as Cartier unveiled an all-new Roadster collection to the world, including seven new references in both medium and large case sizes in steel as well as yellow gold. All of the Roadster’s iconic hallmarks remain intact, with thoughtful improvements made at both technical and aesthetic levels.

From the onset of this relaunch, the Cartier Manufacture aimed to redefine proportions, sharpen lines, and rethink the ergonomics of the Roadster without altering its distinctive shape. From a head-on view, its bezel forms a sort of bridge between its case flanks, adding a layer of dimensionality and character to its case. There’s a visual strength there despite the large models only measuring 38mm wide by 47mm from lug to lug. Then there’s the way its crown becomes a part of the case form itself, then extending through to the date magnifier on its sapphire crystal, creating both a unique architectural form and a design nod to the mechanical world.

The homage to automotive design is echoed in the Roadster’s dial as well. Cartier has preserved the circular striated pattern, the rail track, and the Roman numerals of past Roadster models, with updates to overall execution. The difference lies in the decorative techniques used, which include an appliqué effect created by a stamping tool to add relief and a varnish applied to the indices and rail track. What we’re left with is an inner dial that is very clearly reminiscent of gauges and speedometers, surrounded by the classic Roman numerals that immediately identify the watch as Cartier.

The Maison has also integrated its QuickSwitch®️ system to the Roadster’s bracelets, allowing for an easy change from metal bracelet to leather strap. Each reference is sold with its corresponding metal bracelet — whether that be in steel, gold, or two-tone steel and gold — as well as a matching alligator leather strap, with the exception of the dark blue steel reference, which comes with a rubber strap rather than leather. This versatility acts as a vehicle of style for all occasions, as the Roadster watches channel both heritage and new technology.
